PULLMAN, Wash. – Freshman Joyce Chong carded a first-round 76 and is in a tie for sixth after the first round of the WSU Cougar Cup hosted by Washington State at Palouse Ridge Golf Course on Monday.

Chong was one of just 16 players to break 80 in rainy, windy conditions on Monday. Overall, Nevada is in seventh place, 11 shots out of the lead, which is held by Montana.

“The weather won today,” Nevada coach Chad Spencer said. “It was pretty poor out there today. So that make’s Joyce’s round that much better. She is a tremendous talent with a lot of ability. She kept us in the tournament with her round today.”

Jamie Yam is tied for 28th after an 81 and Louise Yi is a shot back of Yam. Allie Wang shot 85 for the Pack while Lauren Hernandez came in with a 90.

“We hit some loose shots today and we didn’t play our best,” Spencer said. “But we are still in it. As poorly as we did today, it is a good sign that we are still in it. And that kind of tells the story of what the weather was like today.

“The weather will be better tomorrow so we need to come back strong.”
