Box Score RENO, Nev. - The University of Nevada (6-3) volleyball needed a sweep and got it defeating Pacific (6-2) by scores of 26-24, 27-25 and 25-21 to win the Wolf Pack Invitational sponsored by Ramada and Best Western Airport Plaza. The Wolf Pack, Pacific and Arizona all went 2-1 but Nevada won the tiebreaker after winning in three sets today. It was the second tournament title in a row for the Pack after winning the Nevada Invitational last weekend.
With the victory the Pack improved to 6-3 and the Tigers dropped to 6-2. In today's first match Arizona defeated Northern Arizona 3-0.
Nevada sophomore middle blocker Janelle Batista was named the most valuable player after her 10 kill and six block performance today. Senior outside hitter Kylie Harrington was also selected to the squad. Pacific was represented by Svenja Engelhardt and Hannah Clancy. Arizona placed Tiffany Olson and Paige Weber on the team. Northern Arizona's Jen Wilson was the seventh member of the squad.
Nevada led the first set 14-9 but the Tigers rallied to tie the score at 22-22. With the set tied at 24-24 freshman Grace Anxo put the Pack on top 25-24 and served and ace to give Nevada the 26-24 victory. The Wolf Pack hit .194 and Pacific .189 in the set.
Trailing 23-14 in set two it looked as if Pacific would tie the match at one set each but junior setter Tatiana Santiago got on a roll and served nine consecutive points and the set was tied at 23-23. The fourth and final tie of the set came at 25-25 before junior outside hitter Erin Garvey's kill off a Santiago assist made it 26-25. Anxo again ended a set with kill off a pass from Santiago to complete the incredible comeback as Nevada won 27-25. The Pack hit .222 and Pacific .216 in set two.
The Tigers jumped to a 10-4 lead in set three but a 13-4 Pack run put Nevada on top 17-14 as they went on to win 25-21 and take the match 3-0. For the third time in the match Anxo ended the set this time with a kill. Nevada hit a match-high .273 in the set and held Pacific to a .125 attack percentage.
Batista and junior outside hitter Erin Garvey led the team with 10 kills each. Santiago finished with 38 assists and libero Nicole Link topped the team with 13 digs.
Englehardt and Jennifer Sanders had 15 and 13 kills respectively for the Tigers. Hannah Clancy tied Santiago for match-high honors with 38 assists. Rebekah Torres posted a match-high 14 digs.
Nevada hit .228 in the match and Pacific .183. The Pack totaled 8.5 blocks to 4.5 for the Tigers. Batista's six led Nevada while Gabby Cowden and Engelhardt had three each for Pacific.
The Pack return to action next week traveling to Davis, Calif. to compete in the UC Davis Invitational. Nevada plays Portland on Friday then UC Davis and Oregon State Saturday.
