RENO, Nev. - Junior quarterback Tyler Lantrip threw a touchdown pass and scored one on the ground to lead the Blue Team past the Silver Team 35-14 in the Silver and Blue Game Saturday morning at Mackay Stadium.
Lantrip completed 12 of 17 passes for 148 yards with one touchdown pass and rushed for 48 yards and one score to lead the Blue Squad. Sophomore Mike Ball led the ground attack for the Blue Team, tallying 67 yards and one touchdown in 12 carries, while junior Rishard Mathews, a transfer from Bakersfield JC, caught five balls for 87 yards.
The Blue Team scored the first three touchdowns of the day. Lantrip completed a two-yard pass to senior Moe Patterson for the first score, while sophomore Mike Ball made its 14-0 with a five-yard run. Lantrip then scored on the ground with a 26-yard run into the end zone.
The Blue defense held the Silver offense in check most of the day, allowing just 45 rushing yards and picking off three passes by senior Colin Kaepernick. The Silver quarterbacks threw for just 113 yards on 8-of-16 passing and one touchdown. Junior Corbin Louks, sophomore Duke Williams and junior James-Michael Johnson each had interceptions for the Blue team, while the Blue defense also scored on a two-yard fumble recovery by junior Shane Anderson.
Senior Kevin Grimes got the Silver Team on the board, returning an interception 67 yards for touchdown to make it 21-7. Redshirt freshman David Fisher also connected on a 21-yard strike to senior Malcolm Shepherd for the Silver Team's only other score.
Approximately 1,500 Wolf Pack fans were in attendance for the event, which featured a game-type atmosphere, including performances by the cheer and dance teams, the firing of the cannon by the ROTC after each score, music and public address.
After the game, the Wolf Pack held an Easter Egg Hunt on the field for children in attendance, and the Wolf Pack offense and defense clashed in the Battle of the Boneyard with the offense winning the rib-eating contest.
Fans also enjoyed autographs and photos with their favorite Wolf Pack players and coaches and food and drinks provided for free by Bully's, Carolina Kitchen BBQ, Carson City BBQ and Men Wielding Fire BBQ.
The Silver & Blue Game wraps up spring practice for the Wolf Pack which opens the 2010 season vs. Eastern Washington on Thursday, Sept. 2 at Mackay Stadium. Nevada's 2010 schedule features seven games on the home field at Mackay Stadium - the first time since 1991 that Nevada has played more than six home games in a season.
