OGDEN, Utah - Saturday's celebration to honor the Northern Nevada Native-American community during the women's basketball has been postponed. The celebration is meant for a dual purpose also giving the community the chance to honor Nevada's senior guard Tahnnee Robinson. The game itself against BYU at Lawlor Events Center will be played as scheduled at 2 p.m. Patrons who received certificates for entrance to the game will be honored. The Native American celebration will be re-scheduled for a game later in the season.
The postponement of the ceremonies is because Robinson will be temporarily away from the team through at least this weekend. The team captain and leading scorer, Robinson will return home indefinitely as she will join her family in mourning the loss of her grandfather Darwin J. St. Clair, Sr. who died suddenly on Thursday, December 30. It is not yet clear as to when Robinson will be able to return to competing with the team.
Robinson grew up on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming. Representatives of the Northern Nevada reservations are planning an honor song presentation for the second consecutive year. The Reno community has chosen to show their respect for both her athletic achievements and the community service work she has done for the community in the two years she has been in Nevada.
The Sheridan College transfer came to Nevada last season. She is currently leading Nevada and the WAC in scoring with 22.7 points per game. She has twice been name the WAC Player of the Week this season and last week was named the MVP of the Caribbean Classic. In her place, fellow senior and friend Johnna Ward will start until Robinson has returned to the team. The Wolf Pack plays tonight at Weber State at 6 p.m. PDT.
