Box Score LAS VEGAS, NEV. - The University of Nevada women's basketball team had its win streak broken Sunday losing at in-state rival UNLV 67-54 at the Thomas & Mack Center. With the loss, Nevada drops to 3-1 on the year while UNLV improves to 3-0.
For the fourth-straight game, senior Tahnee Robinson led all scorers tallying 18 with three three-pointers, 5-6 from the free throw line and six rebounds. Senior Johnna Ward finished with 8 points. Senior Shavon Moore led all rebounders with 12, but after a career night at Sac State Wednesday, she scored just three points going 0-10 from the field.
As a team, Nevada shot 27.9 percent on 17-61 shooting, hitting 15-22 free throws. The Wolf Pack improved on ball protection, turning the ball over just 16 times, but got out-rebounded for the first time this year, 48-45 and allowed 18 second-chance points.
It was a back-and-forth game from the beginning with three ties and four lead changes. Nevada battled back from an early five-point deficit with back-to-back threes from Robinson. After taking an 18-17 lead with 6:59 to play, the Wolf Pack gave up a 13-5 run to end the first half and was down 32-23 at the intermission.
In the first half, Robinson had nine points, all scored from beyond the arc. Ward had dished in five points to combine with Robinson for all four of the Pack's threes in the first half. Nevada shot 26.7 percent from the field in the first half hitting 8-30 shots. The Pack also allowed UNLV to take the rebound advantage 25-19, allowing the Rebels eight second-chance points.
Nevada will now return home to host the John Ascuaga's Nugget Classic, Nov. 26-27 at Lawlor Events Center. Nevada will open the tournament at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26 against NC State with San Diego State and Minnesota also in the field. Fans that have purchased tickets for the Boise State football game Friday night can come a little early and use their ticket to get into the women's basketball on Friday for free.
