SEASIDE, Calif. – Senior Scott Smith fired a 71 on Tuesday and finished second individually as the Nevada men’s golf team took fifth at the Saint Mary’s Invitational.
Smith carded a 71 on Tuesday and placed second, two strokes behind medalist Tom Usher of Notre Dame. Smith finished with a 2-under 214 in the third-round tournament.
Chris Plappert shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday and moved up to a Top 20 finish as Plapper tied for 18th in the event. Gavin Kwon also shot 72 in the final round and moved up 20 spots to a tie for 26th place.
Nevada was fifth overall, three shots behind fourth-place Santa Clara and seven strokes behind Pacific. Notre Dame won the tournament going away with the host school, Saint Mary’s, in second place, 14 strokes behind Notre Dame and eight strokes ahead of Nevada.
The Wolf Pack got better in each of the three rounds after a 302 in the first round. Nevada followed that up with a 296 before a 291 in the final round at the Bayonet & Blackhorse Golf Courses.
Nevada will play one more event this fall as the Pack will compete in the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., next week (11/1-3).
