With the win, Nevada …
- Improves to 5-0 on the season, 495-434-33 overall (104th season) and 115-94 as an FBS school.
- Coach Chris Ault improved to 211-96-1 in his 26-year career.
- Improved its advantage in the all-time series to 21-15.
BEST START: At 5-0, this extends Nevada’s best start in its FBS history (since 1992). The 5-0 start also marks Nevada’s best start since the 1991 team went 12-0 to start the season. This is Nevada’s seventh 5-0 start in the history of the program.
SIX IN A ROW: This marks Nevada’s sixth straight win in the rivalry as Nevada now leads the all-time season 21-15. This is the first time either team in the series has ever won six in a row.
KAP GOES TO 3-0 VS. UNLV: Wolf Pack quarterback Colin Kaepernick became the second quarterback in Nevada history to win three games against UNLV in his career as the starter. Kaepernick led the Pack to victories in 2008, 2009 and 2010.
In three games as a starter against the Rebels, Kaepernick has accounted for 1,018 yards of total offense and nine touchdowns. In those same three games, UNLV, as a team, accounted for 1,021 yards of total offense and nine touchdowns.
TAUA BREAKS OUT: Senior Vai Taua capped off his final game against UNLV in style, with 188 yards and three rushing touchdowns plus a 22-yard TD reception from Colin Kaepernick.
Taua’s first score of the game came on a 3-yard plunge in the second quarter. Then came the 22-yard TD reception from Kaepernick. In the third quarter, Taua broke free for a 72-yard TD run – his longest since the Idaho game last year (that was 89 yards). In the fourth quarter, Taua ran the WildWolf formation and scored a 2-yard touchdown. The rushing total was the most for Taua since he galloped for 263 yards against Fresno State in 2008.
KAP MOVES INTO 7TH IN NCAA’S CAREER QUARTERBACK RUSHING: Colin Kaepernick entered the game in 10th all-time in NCAA career rushing yards by a quarterback. He finished the night in seventh place.
Kaepernick passed Air Force’s Beau Morgan for ninth place and then moved past Navy’s Chris McCoy for eighth place. In the third quarter, Kaepernick moved past former Heisman Winner Eric Crouch of Nebraska, who rushed for 3,434 yards from 1998-2001. Crouch got to his total in 43 games while Kaepernick was played in his 42nd career game Saturday night. Kaepernick now has 3,454 career rushing yards.
SCORING FIRST: Nevada has now scored on each of its opening drives this season (four touchdowns, 1 field goal. The Wolf Pack has received the opening kick in the first four games but UNLV won the toss on Saturday and elected to receive. After the Pack defense forced a three-and-out, Nevada drive the down the field and scored on a 16-yard run by Colin Kaepernick.
ET CETERA: UNLV won the toss and elected to receive while Nevada defended the south end zone … Courtney Randall scored in the second quarter on a 1-yard run – his first rushing touchdown of the season after TD reception last week at BYU … Senior Dontay Moch had a sack (which is also a tackle for loss)and three total tackles for loss and moved closer to the school’s all-time record in each category (which is also the WAC record) … With a first-half rushing touchdown, Colin Kaepernick moved into fourth place alone on the NCAA rushing TDs by a quarterback list with 48, ahead of Pat White of West Virginia, Brian Mitchell of La.-Lafayette and Dan LeFevour of Central Michigan … Nevada committed a season-high three turnovers … Nevada won the time of possession … Brandon Marshall had his second career interception to end the first half – it was his first pick since the 2008 season opener against Grambling State … Nevada did not punt.
QUARTERBACK CLUB: This week’s Quarterback Club will be held at Silver Oak Golf Course in Carson City. The event is sold out. Ault will review last week's game and go over game film at each game. He will also introduce players from the team and hold a question and answer session with the fans. The luncheons are open to the public. Doors at the Peppermill will open at 11:30 a.m. and the luncheon program begins at noon. Luncheon cost is $17 at the door. The room will be announced the day of the luncheon. The 2010 Quarterback Club Luncheons will be held each Monday following Nevada football games with luncheons scheduled for Sept. 13, 20, 27; Oct. 4, 11, 18; and Nov. 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29.
NEXT UP: After two weeks on the road, Nevada will return home to Mackay Stadium to open Western Athletic Conference play. San Jose State will come to Reno for the Wolf Pack’s Homecoming game. The game will be televised by ESPNU and is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
