RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada has hired Stanford co-defensive coordinator Andy Buh to coordinate the Wolf Pack’s defense, head coach Chris Ault announced today.
Buh (pronounced: Boo) returns to Reno after playing and coaching for Nevada in the 1990s. He is coming off three successful seasons at Stanford, including the past two as the co-defensive coordinator for the Cardinal.
“Over the past 13 years, I have watched Andy grow into an outstanding defensive coach,” Ault said. “He will bring the sense of urgency and new energy that we need on that side of the ball. His experience at Stanford speaks volumes about his ability to coach at this level. Andy is a focused man who coaches just like he played – at full speed.”
“I am honored to be back in this community and to have the challenge of leading the Nevada defense,” Buh said. “It is a thrill to be back walking the sidelines of Mackay Stadium and to do so alongside Coach Ault. I’m fired up to get this defense going.”
In 13 seasons of collegiate coaching, Buh has worked at four other West Coast schools -- including two Pac-10 programs – and tutored a handful of players who went on to the NFL. He is fresh off a Sun Bowl appearance with the Cardinal as he helped Stanford to an 8-5 record and a tie for second place in the Pac-10.
Buh, 36, played at Nevada in 1993 and 1994 and helped the Pack to a Big West championship as a senior in 1994. The Pack went 16-6 during Buh’s two seasons in Silver and Blue. He graduated from Nevada with a degree in physical education in 1996. After a season as an assistant coach at Orange Glen High School in California, Buh returned to Nevada as a graduate assistant during the 1997 and 1998 seasons. He was hired as an assistant coach for the 1999 season and he worked with the secondary and special teams.
Buh spent two seasons (2000-01) at Cal as a defensive administrative assistant before four seasons coaching linebackers at San Diego State. During his time with the Aztecs, Buh coached four players who went on to the NFL, including Kirk Morrison, a two-time Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year. In 2005, Buh had two of his linebackers on national watch lists for the Nagurski and Butkus Awards.
Buh spent the 2006 season at Fresno State before moving to Stanford in 2007 to coach linebackers for the Cardinal. In 2008, he was promoted by coach Jim Harbaugh to co-defensive coordinator for the Cardinal. Stanford had four defensive players earn All Pac-10 recognition this season as the Cardinal made their first bowl appearance (Sun Bowl) since 2001. He worked alongside Ron Lynn, who has had a long coaching career in college and in the NFL and who is one of the most respected defensive minds in the game. In 2007, Buh also worked under Scott Shafer, who has been the defensive coordinator at Michigan and Syracuse.
“Andy Buh is a tremendous young coach who not only brings great knowledge to the defensive side of the ball, but great passion for the game as well,” Shafer said. “He is an outstanding teacher of the game who relates well to the student-athlete. Nevada has landed a good one.”
A native of Escondido, Calif. (Orange Glen HS), Buh played at Palomar College in Southern California, where he helped the team to a share of the 1991 Junior College Grid-Wire national championship as a freshman. He earned juco All-America honors as a sophomore in 1992 before transferring to Nevada.
Buh and his wife, Kelly, are expecting their first child in May.
