BALDWIN AND HARRINGTON NAMED TO WAC COACHES' PREASEASON TEAM:
Nevada placed juniors Lindsay Baldwin and Kylie Harrington on the 2009 WAC Preseason Coaches' team as selected by the nine coaches. A middle blocker, Baldwin was also selected to the 2008 preseason team and was first-team All-WAC selection as a sophomore. She led the team averaging 1.14 blocks and 3.54 points per set which ranked fourth and seventh respectively in the conference. Her 2.71 kills per set was good for second on the squad. In just two seasons she has etched her name in the Nevada record book seven times.
Harrington started at outside hitter last season and was selected to the All-WAC second team after leading the team with 2.90 kills per set which was good for eighth in the conference. She was second on the team averaging 3.24 points per set and third with a 1.90 digs per set average. On the year she produced a team-high eight double-doubles to tie for fifth most in the WAC.
BALANCED CLASSES: The 2009 squad is well balanced within its classes as the 14 member squad is made up of three seniors, four juniors, four sophomores and three freshman. The balance is reflected in the projected starting lineup as two seniors, three juniors, two sophomores and a freshman are scheduled to get starting assignments for the second week in a row.
SCRUGGS BEGINS 13TH SEASON: University of Nevada head coach Devin Scruggs is in her 13th season as a head coach for the Wolf Pack in 2009 and will be looking to lead the Pack to yet another winning season. Scruggs has guided the Pack to all five of the schools NCAA Tournament appearances. In her previous 12 years she posted a career mark of 201-150. Her 200th victory came last season as the Pack knocked off Utah State 3-1 on Oct. 25.
Team Notes: For the first times since 2003 Nevada won its season opener downing Connecticut 3-2 last weekend...the Pack were picked to finish fifth in the WAC Preseason Coaches' Poll...going 1-2 last weekend the Pack played a 5-set, 4-set and 3-set match in consecutive days in the Marriott Courtyard/Fairfield Invitational...Nevada plays four weekends of tournaments to open the 2009 season, two at home and two on the road....the Pack rank third in hitting (.235%), fourth in assists (11.08 aps), eighth in blocking (1.75 bps), ninth in digs (11.00 dps), ninth in opponent hitting percentage (.284%), fourth in kills (11.92 kps) and are tied for seventh in service aces (1.08 saps) in the WAC...13 of the 14 players on the roster saw action the first weekend of the season.
Player Notes: Junior Lindsay Baldwin represented the Wolf Pack on the Courtyard Marriott/Fairfield Invitational team last weekend after averaging 2.50 kills, 1.00 block and 3.13 points per set while hitting .348 in the three matches...junior Kylie Harrington led the Pack in kills in all three matches to open with season reaching double figures in every outing with 17 vs. UCONN, 11 vs. UC Irvine and 12 vs. Saint Mary's...sophomore Erin Garvey is second in the WAC with a .513 attack percentage while Baldwin ranks seventh at .348...senior setter Sonnie Sei split time with sophomore Tatiana Santiago the first weekend of play...Sei ranks ninth in the conference averaging 5.75 assists per set while Santiago is averaging 4.25 per set...both Sei and Santiago posted double figures in all three matches the opening weekend...Baldwin tops the team averaging 1.00 block per set which is tied for 10th in the WAC...Harrington's 3.33 kills and .42 service aces per set both rank fifth in the WAC and her 3.96 points per set average is sixth...junior libero Nicole Link is ninth in the conference averaging 3.42 digs per set...Link's 19 digs vs. UCONN is the third best total in the WAC this season...Harrington's five service aces is tied for the most by any WAC player this season...Harrington's 17 kills and Links 19 digs versus UCONN were both match highs...senior Jorgan Staker finished with 10 kills which is three off her career-high and hit .368 in the Pack match with UC Irvine.
Four Pack Players Climbing Career Lists: Four Pack players are current ranked in the top 10 in various career lists and continue to climb the career charts this season.
Junior Lindsay Baldwin is seventh in points with 719.5, ranks sixth in block assists having totaled 245 and is sixth with 272 career total blocks.
The first weekend of play has pushed junior Kylie Harrington into a tie with Kellie Burton (2002-04) for 10th with 550.5 career points.
Senior setter Sonnie Sei ranks ninth with 1,151 career assists. Another senior Jorgan Staker is eighth with 195 block assists.
