RENO, Nev. -- The 2009 edition of University of Nevada football opens practice today at Wolf Pack Park.
Over the past three days, 105 plahyers reported to preseason camp and Media Day was held on Thursday. Today marks the first practice of the season, 29 days before the season opener at Notre Dame.
"We're ready to go," Nevada coach Chris Ault said. "We know the challenges that are ahead of us and we know what we have to accomplish before we can attack those challenges. We feel we have a talented team and now it's time to go to work."
The Wolf Pack will complete its testing period with the annual "Run to Win" test this morning before the first practice in the afternoon at Wolf Pack Park. Today marks the first the NCAA-mandated acclimation period. Players will work out today and Saturday in helmets only before donning half-pads for Sunday and Monday. The first day of full pads is Tuesday, which concludes the acclimation period.
The team will hold five days of two-a-day practices and will scrimmage a handful of times during preseason camp.
The players finished weight-room testing on Thursday and the results left Director of Strength and Conditioning Matt Eck extremely satisfied. A number of listing records were set, including tight end Virgil Green break all three marks (bench press, hang clean and squat) at the tight end position. Defensive end Kevin Basped broke the school record (all positions) with a hang clean of 436 pounds.
"In my time here, this is the best offseason we have had," Eck said. "We have made some unbelievable strides, not just in strength, but speed, agility, endurance and conditioning. I am very, very pleased with the results."
