SANTA CRUZ, Calif. The University of Nevada men's golf team finished in 14th place at the 2009 Western Intercollegiate, being held Sunday-Tuesday, March 29-31 at the par 70, 6,511-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course.
Nevada turned in a 30-over 310 on Tuesday and finished 14th with a three-round total of 75-over 915 (295-310-310). Oregon won the 18-team tournament with a three-day tally of 25-over 865, besting runner-ups Colorado (873) and Fresno State (873) by eight strokes. Michigan State (874) and California (885) rounded out the top five teams.
For the Wolf Pack, juniors Taylor Coffman (73-82-73) and Ryan Hallisey (74-73-81) and sophomore Scott Smith (72-78-78) all finished tied for 44th at 18-over 228. Junior Jared Becher ended up tied for 61st at 24-over 234 (76-77-81), and senior Matt Rippy finished 67th (76-82-78=236).
Oregon State’s Diego Velasquez captured individual medalist honors, carding a 70 on Tuesday and finishing at even-par 210 (74-66-70). He turned in a three-stroke win over Derek Tolan of Colorado and Jack Newman of Michigan State, who both finished at three-over 213.
The Wolf Pack will return to action April 6-7, wrapping up the regular season with the Stevinson Ranch Invitational. The University of Colorado will play host to that tournament at the Stevinson Ranch Golf Course in Stevinson, Calif.
The 2009 Western Athletic Conference Championships are set for April 27-29 at the Rio Secco Golf Course in Las Vegas, Nev. The winner of the WAC Championship will receive an automatic berth to one of six NCAA Regional sites.
