FRESNO, Calif. Junior Taylor Coffman was the Wolf Pack’s top finisher as the University of Nevada men's golf team ended up in ninth place at the Fresno State Lexus Classic, held Monday-Tuesday, March 9-10 at the par 72, 6,511-yard Belmont Country Club.
The Wolf Pack shot an eight-over 296 in Tuesday’s final round and finished ninth with a three-round total of 27-over 891 (300-295-296). No. 14 Washington won the 20-team tournament, carding a seven-under 281 on Tuesday and finishing at one-over 865 (299-285-281). The Huskies turned in a five-stroke victory over tournament host Fresno State (870), while UC Irvine (875), No. 24 UC Davis (876) and San Diego State (877) rounded out the top five teams.
Coffman turned in his third top 20 showing of the season, finishing 18th at three-over 219 (72-70-77). Junior Ryan Hallisey finished in a tie for 25th at six-over 222 (74-75-73), while Junior Jared Becher carded Nevada’s best round of the tournament with a three-under 69 on Tuesday and ended up in a tie for 35th at eight-over 224. That marked his team-leading sixth round in the 60s this season. Sophomore Scott Smith finished in a tie for 49th (76-73-78=227), while sophomore Chris Plappert ended up in a tie for 99th to round out the Wolf Pack lineup (86-80-77=243).
Ramie Sprinkling of UC Davis won individual medalist honors at the Fresno State Lexus Classic with a three-round total of four-under 212 (68-75-69). He turned in a two-stroke victory over a trio of players at two-under 214.
Nevada returns to action March 29-31, traveling to the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif. San Jose State will play host to the tournament at the Pasatiempo Golf Course.
