RENO, Nev. The University of Nevada soccer team will open its spring practice on February 17 and will play a total of seven games during its spring season.

Nevada will play seven games on five dates this spring in preparation for the fall.  The Pack will open practice with 20-hour weeks starting on February 17 and running through April 14.  Home spring matches will be played at Mackay Stadium and are free.

“We are extremely excited about this upcoming spring season.  Our staff has spent a great deal of time and effort developing the next four months of our training cycle,” second-year head coach Jaime Frias said.  “Our philosophy at Nevada is to give our student- athletes the best resources possible for them to reach their full potential.  Development is the main theme for us in the spring and we are working closely with other experts in order to maximize the gains’ our players will make this spring.”

Nevada will play two games in Moraga, Calif., against Cal State Bakersfield and Saint Mary’s on February 28.  The Pack will play two home games this spring against Sacramento State on March 7 and versus Feather River College on March 28.

Nevada will play two games on April 2 in Chico, Calif., against UC Davis and Chico State and the Pack will closeout its spring match schedule at home on April 11 with an alumni game.

“Our players are currently working with a nutritionist who is guiding them and educating them on what fuel’ is best for their bodies at this point of their yearly training cycle.  The team is also working with a speed and agility expert who has worked with world class track and field athletes and NFL combine bound players,” Frias said.  “We have access to a strength coach who works directly with them in the weight room.  Lastly, what makes our program unique is that we have a mental conditioning coach on staff that is working on developing our team’s, as well as each individual’s leadership qualities on and off the playing field.  With all of these resources we believe our team will improve immensely as we prepare to tackle the lofty goals we’ve set for ourselves in 2009.”

Nevada finished the 2008 season with a 3-14-3 record as the Pack lost to Utah State in the semifinals of the WAC Tournament in Reno, Nev.
