FRESNO, Calif. Despite shooting a season-high 48.9 percent from the floor, the University of Nevada women’s basketball team fell at first-place Fresno State 65-53 Friday night in Fresno, Calif.
With the loss Nevada falls to 14-13 overall (8-6 WAC) while Fresno State improves to 19-7 overall (10-3 WAC).
Fresno State opened the game on a 12-4 run and led by eight with 16:40 left in the half. A fast-break layup by Dellena Criner brought Nevada to within three, 15-12, with 12:50 remaining in the half.
Megan Cherry’s three pointer tied the game at 19-19 with 7:39 left in the half but after Cherry’s three, Fresno State went on a 10-2 run to go ahead 29-21 with 5:11 to play in the half.
Fresno State extended its lead to 34-23 with 3:12 left in the half before the Bulldogs took an eight-point lead, 36-28, at half.
Shavon Moore led Nevada at the half with a team-high 10 points and a team-high five rebounds. As a team the Pack shot 54.5 percent (12-of-22) from the floor while the Bulldogs shot 42.4 percent (6-of-17) from the floor but made six three pointers in the half.
Nevada cut Fresno State’s lead to six, 38-32, with 16:54 left in the game but the Bulldogs pushed its lead back to 12 points, 46-34, with 14:24 remaining.
Fresno State took an 18-point lead with 7:51 to play, 60-42, after hitting three pointers on four consecutive possessions. The Bulldogs extended its lead to 19 points, 65-46, with 4:05 to play and the Pack could get no closer than 13 the rest of the way as Fresno State posted the 65-53 win.
Criner led three Nevada players in double figures with 13 in the loss while Moore added 12 and Kayla Williams scored 10. Moore also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Nevada shot 48.9 percent from the floor (23-of-47) while Fresno State shot 42.1 percent (24-of-57) but the Bulldogs, who lead the nation in three pointers made, went 11-of-31 from three-point range.
Nevada will play at Idaho on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
