WAHIAWA, Hawaii - Led by sophomore Scott Smith, the University of Nevada men's golf team finished seventh at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, held Wednesday-Friday, Feb. 18-20 at the par 72, 6,917-yard Leilehua Golf Course.
As a team, Nevada shot a one-under 287 on Friday and ended up in seventh with a three-day total of 12-under 852 (284-281-287). Texas A&M won the 17-team John Burns Intercollegiate with a three-day total of 28-under 836 (286-278-272). The Aggies turned in a three-stroke victory over New Mexico (839), while Arizona (840), Arkansas (849) and Denver (850) rounded out the top five teams.
Smith led the Wolf Pack with a tie for 10th. He turned in his third straight sub-par round with a two-under 70 on Friday and ended up at six-under 210 for the tournament (69-71-70). Junior Ryan Hallisey finished two strokes behind and tied for 24th at three-under 213 (72-71-70), while junior Jared Becher tied for 31st at two-under 214 (73-68-73). Sophomore Chris Plappert ended up in a tie for 33rd at one-under 215 (70-71-74), while junior Taylor Coffman was tied for 78th at 11-over 227 (74-74-79).
New Mexico’s James Erkenbeck captured individual medalist honors after carding a seven-under 65 on Friday and tallying a three-day total of 11-under 205. He bested Arizona’s Tarquin Macmanus by one stroke (64-70-72=206).
The Wolf Pack will return to action March 9-10, traveling to the Fresno Lexus Classic in Fresno, Calif. Fresno State will play host to that tournament at the Belmont Country Club.
