FRESNO, Calif. – Sophomore Wessim Derbal got off to a quick start to the 2009 season with an A Flight win at the Bulldog Classic hosted by Fresno State on Friday.
Derbal, the top seed, topped Asaf Cohen in straight sets to move into Saturday’s quarterfinals.
Senior Alex Daruty also won his first match, beating Renan Delsin of Pacific in the Round of 32 but Daruty fell in the Round of 16 to Cal’s Bo Katsarov.
In the B Flight, junior Kristian Kuharszky beat UC Davis’ Hunter Lee in the opening round before falling to Hugo Verdo Fortin of Fresno State in the Round of 16. Senior Gabe Kanzelmeyer fell to Elnar Hart of USF in the first round but Kanzelmeyer bounced back in the consolation bracket over Cal Poly’s Alex Sonesson, the flight’s No. 3 seed.
Senior Antone Bulich lost his C Flight match.
In doubles play, Derbel and Daruty, the A flight’s No. 3 seed, were upset by Cal’s Zach Gilbert and Sky Lovill.
Kanzelmeyer and Kuharszky advanced in the B Flight by default.
Play continues Saturday and concludes Sunday at Fresno State.
