About Nevada
The University of Nevada soccer team recorded a 0-1-1 record over the weekend recording a 0-0 (2OT) tie at UW-Green Bay before falling at Wisconsin, 4-0. Nevada will play one match this week, hosting UC Davis on Sunday at 1 p.m. PT at Mackay Stadium. The Pack returns 15 letterwinners and nine starters from its 2007 team that recorded its third consecutive WAC Tournament appearance. The Pack welcomes seven newcomers to its 2008 team.
2008 Nevada Camper Day vs. UC Davis
Nevada camper day is Sunday, September 28 when the Wolf Pack faces UC Davis at 1 p.m. All campers who attended one of Nevada’s soccer camps this summer will receive free admission to the game by wearing their 2008 Nevada soccer camp t-shirt.
Godwin Named A Candidate For Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award
Senior defender Patrice Godwin has been selected as one of the 30 NCAA Division I women’s soccer candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The 30 NCAA Division I women’s soccer players were selected based on their achievements in four areas: classroom, character, community and competition. Godwin, a senior from Reseda, Calif., is a four-year starter on Nevada’s soccer team and is a team captain this season. The defender has anchored a Nevada defense that has recorded 23 shutouts during her career. She has started and played in 62 career games for Nevada. In July of 2008, she was selected to attend the U23 Select/Amateur National Team Training Camp. She was named to the All-WAC second team in 2007. During her career, she has led Nevada to three WAC Tournament appearances, including the program’s first-ever appearance in 2005. Godwin also led Nevada to its first WAC Tournament Title and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2006. Godwin, an information systems major, was named to the WAC All-Academic team in 2006 and 2007 and earned a Pack Pride Award during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 school years. she hopes to work for Google or Apple after graduation. She has been a part of several volunteer activities during her time at Nevada, including volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in 2005. Godwin has also volunteered at Renown, Nevada’s Soccer Clinic and the Great Basin Youth Soccer League clinic. During the summer, she worked at Kid’s University - a program which allowed her to interact with members of the community.
Hunt Records Second Career Shutout
Goalkeeper Sarah Hunt recorded her second career shutout at UW-Green Bay on September 19. She posted her first career shutout in Nevada’s 0-0 (2OT) tie at San Francisco on September 5. She recorded five saves in the game game to help Nevada to the 0-0 (2OT) tie. This season, Hunt has set career-highs in both saves in a match and in a season. Hunt, who played in four games while starting two last season, ended 2007 with 10 saves. This season, she has started all eight of the Pack’s games. She has recorded 38 saves through the first eight games including a career-high seven versus Pacific and Minnesota.
Miller Leads The Team In Points
Senior Samantha Miller has recorded a team-leading three points this season. She recorded her 14th career goal at UNLV on August 31 and recorded her 11th career assist on September 7 versus Portland State. Miller is tied for third all-time in career points (39) and is looking to join teammates Miranda Montejo (44 points) and Karen Zmirak (42 points) as the only players in program history to record at least 40 career points. Miller, who has recorded 120 career shots, is four shots away from tying Lauren Kinneman (2003-06) for most shots all-time (124).
Zmirak Back At It
Karen Zmirak recorded her 10th career assist on Friday against Minnesota after entering the match as a substitute in the 61st minute. Zmirak, who is second all-time in career points with 42, is two points from tying teammate Miranda Montejo for the most career points all-time.
News And Notes
Freshman Ellie Stott made her collegiate debut for Nevada against Wisconsin on September 21...five players have recorded at least one point for the Pack this season (Samantha Miller, Karen Zmirak, Cristen Drummond, Erin Smith and Jessica Thompson)...Samantha Miller leads the team with three (one goal and one assist)...Nevada has recorded at least one tie every year since the 2004 season...Nevada recorded a season-high 21 shots against Portland State...senior Karen Zmirak has led the team in points the last two seasons...she recorded 26 points in 2006 and 15 points in 2007...Nevada has four current players ranked in the top-10 in career points (Miranda Montejo (44), Karen Zmirak (42), Samantha Miller (39) and Jessica Thompson (30)...first-year head coach Jaime Frias is the fourth head coach in Nevada’s nine year history...Nevada faced two first-time opponents this year, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
Smith Records First Career Goal
Sophomore defender Erin Smith scored her first career goal in Nevada’s 2-1 loss to Minnesota Friday night. With Smith’s goal Friday night, three of the four of the Pack’s starting defenders have recorded at least one career point for Nevada (Smith 2 points; Patrice Godwin 1 point; Devin Noe 8 points).
Follow The Leader
Senior Miranda Montejo is the Pack’s all-time leader in points with 44. She is also second all-time in career goals (17) and needs two goals to become Nevada’s all-time leader in goals. Senior Karen Zmirak is second all-time in career points (42) and is third in career goals (16). Senior Jessica Thompson is first all-time in assists with 16. Miller has recorded 11 career assists while Montejo had recorded 10.
Playing Time
Two Nevada players, senior goalkeeper Sarah Hunt and junior defender Nikki McEachern, have each played every minute for the Pack this season (760:00). Senior Patrice Godwin, who last season played 1634:00 minutes out of a possible 1640:00 minutes, is third on the team in minutes played this season with 718:00.
Assist Queen At It Again
Senior Jessica Thompson recorded her first assist of the season, setting up Samantha
Miller against UNLV. Thompson is Nevada’s all-time leader in assists and the assist versus UNLV was Thompson’s 16th of her career. She recorded five assists as a freshman in 2005, five as a sophomore in 2006 and five as a junior in 2007. The assist gave Thompson 30 career points making her the sixth player in school history to record at least 30 career points.

All-Time Series: UC Davis leads the all-time series 2-1.
Last Meeting: Nevada posted a 4-1 win at UC Davis on Sept. 24, 2007. Samantha Miller, Blaine Dugan, Vanessa Mann and Cristen Drummond all scored for the Pack.
A Look at UC Davis: The Aggies are 4-2-2 this season and won both of its matches last weekend, being Idaho State, 2-1, and Utah Valley, 2-1 at the Idaho State Classic in Pocatello, Idaho. Rochelle VanBuskirk leads the team with seven points (3 goals, 1 assist) while Marisa Boge is second with six (2 goals, 2 assists). Goalkeeper Sarah Peters has a 1.16 GAA and has recorded two shutouts. She has allowed 10 goals and has made 27 saves. UC Davis is coached by MaryClare Robinson who is in her 17th season with the Aggies.
Montejo Named To The Preseason All-WAC Team
Senior Miranda Montejo was named to the 2008 Preseason All-WAC team for the first time in her career. Montejo, a two-time All-WAC second team selection, has played in 67 career games for Nevada, making 58 starts. Montejo has recorded 17 career goals and 10 career assists. Her selection marks the ninth time a Nevada player has earned Preseason All-WAC honors.
Nevada To Host The 2008 WAC Soccer Tournament
The University of Nevada and Mackay Stadium will host the WAC Soccer Tournament for the second time in program history. The league’s top six teams from the regular season standings will qualify for the conference tournament. This fall will mark the second time Nevada has hosted the conference soccer tournament. The Pack hosted the tournament for the first time in 2006, beating Fresno State in the championship game 4-2 in penalty kicks to win its first WAC Tournament title and qualify for its first NCAA Tournament appearance. Nevada has qualified for the WAC Tournament every season since the program’s first appearance in 2005.
GBYSL Game-Day Information
Thanks to a generous donation to the Nevada soccer program, all members of the Great Basin Youth Soccer League U-14 and younger, will get in free to all of Nevada’s home matches by showing a copy of their GBYSL membership card at the gate or by wearing their uniform to the game. Due to NCAA rules, high school players who play in the GBYSL are not eligible.
