Las Cruces, N.M.- The University of Nevada (5-5, 1-1 WAC) volleyball team was swept by scores of 18-25, 16-25 and 19-25 in a Western Athletic Conference match at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces, N.M. Saturday night. The loss leaves the Wolf Pack at 5-5 on the season and 1-1 in WAC play after the opening weekend of conference play. The Aggies improved to 7-6 on the year and are 2-0 in WAC action.
NMSU took control of the match early in set one jumping to a 7-2 lead and held a 10-point advantage at 18-8 on the way to the 25-18 victory. Offensively the Pack hit zero in set one and the Aggies .130.
Set two was much the same as the first as the Aggies took an early 5-1 lead and never trailed in winning 25-16. NMSU would take a 2-0 lead in the match into the break. Nevada hit negative .062 in the second set and the Aggies posted a .200 attack percentage.
The Aggies continued the trend in set three taking a 6-2 advantage on the way to the 25-19 set win and 3-0 match victory. The Pack had their best hitting set of the night a .172 while NMSU again hit .200.
Freshman outside hitter Kylee Vance led the Pack with seven kills while freshman right side hitter Erin Garvey and sophomore outside hitter Kylie Harrington added five each. Junior setter Sonnie Sei dished out 11 assists for the Pack and senior libero Allison Hernandez totaled nine digs.
NMSU was led by Krista Altermatt and Lindsey You who totaled 13 and 12 kills respectively. Libero Krystal Torres finished with a match-high 11 digs. Both Aggie setters reached double figures with Jennah Devries leading the squad with 20 and Alyssa Gintant added 14.
NMSU hit .171 in the match compared to .032 for Nevada. The Aggies won the blocking battle 12-7 and were led by Amber Simpson’s match-high six. Sophomore Lindsay Baldwin topped the Wolf Pack with four blocks on the night.
Nevada now returns home to host San Jose State University on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Virginia Street Gym.
