Brandon Marshall arrived at Nevada with the frame of a linebacker. But he had the speed of a defensive back.
So during his first season with the Pack in 2007, Marshall redshirted and thrived on the scout team. Meanwhile, the coaching staff wrestled with the decision to keep him in the linebacker corps or take a look at him as a safety. When Nevada switched to a 4-3 scheme in the offseason, Marshall's role as a linebacker was cemented. Now, in the fourth day of preseason camp, Marshall is running with the first team defense.
"Brandon has done everything we have asked of him so far," said Ken Wilson, Nevada's associate head coach and linebackers coach. "So far, we really like we see out of him. He is picking up the scheme really well. He plays hard and he's got the speed to do a lot of things."
Marshall, who prepped at Cimarron-Memorial High School in Las Vegas, entered camp at 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds. Wilson said that Marshall has moved into the depth chart as the top WOLF linebacker right now, a position that has been held by returning starter Jerome Johnson.
"Like I said, Brandon has looked really good so far," Wilson said.
