LAS VEGAS, Nev. The University of Nevada soccer team fell to UNLV, 5-1, in the first game of the UNLV Nike Classic Friday morning in Las Vegas, Nev.

 

With the win, UNLV remains unbeaten on the year (2-0-1) and avenged a 3-0 loss to Nevada (0-2) in 2007.

 

UNLV jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead in the second minute of the game as Ashleigh Shoughro scored on a shot from 16 yards out that beat Nevada goalkeeper Sarah Hunt to the far post.  The Rebels went up 2-0 in the 27th minute as Brianna Moore scored from five yards out on an assist from Britteny Flores.

 

UNLV added two goals within a three-minute span to go up 4-0 at halftime.  Niki Connolly headed in the Rebels third goal of the game in the 32nd minute on an assist from Dani Morin while Katherine Orellana put UNLV up 4-0 in the 35th minute as she scored off a deflected save.

 

The Rebels increased their lead to 5-0 in the 58th minute as Amanda Forrester took the ball through the Pack defense and scored an unassisted goal.

 

Samantha Miller put Nevada on the scoreboard in the 68th minute.  After a foul on UNLV, Jessica Thompson took advantage of a quick restart and found Miller who recorded her first goal of the season.  Thompson, who is Nevada’s all-time leader in assists, recorded her 16th career assist for the Pack.

 

Hunt played the full game for Nevada in goal and recorded a career-high five saves.  Alicia Lugo played 62 minutes in goal for the Rebel and recorded one save.  Nicole Adams came on for Lugo in the second half and played 28 minutes while allowing one goal and recording one save. 

 

UNLV recorded 15 shots (10 on goal) in the game while Nevada recorded six (three on goal).  Miller led Nevada with three shots, two of which were on goal.

 

Nevada will face Pacific on Sunday at 1 p.m. in the Pack’s final game of the UNLV Nike Classic.
