RENO, Nev. Senior Dellena Criner scored a game-high 20 points to lead three Nevada players in double figures as the University of Nevada women’s basketball team beat Eastern Washington 64-49 Friday night at Lawlor Events Center.

 

With the win, Nevada improved to 1-0 on the year while Eastern Washington fell to 0-1.

 

Eastern Washington jumped ahead 13-8 with 12:46 remaining in the first half before a lay up by Cherlanda Franklin tied the game at 15-15 with 10:59 left in the first half.  The Pack went ahead by six, 29-23, on a Criner three-point play with 3:34 remaining in the half. 

 

The Pack went up by nine, 32-23, with 2:18 left in the first half before taking a 34-29 lead at the half.

 

Nevada went up by seven, 36-29, at the start of the second half on a jumper by Shavon Moore and took a 10 point lead, 50-40, with 10:59 left to play on a fast-break lay by from Criner.

 

The Pack extended its lead to 13, 59-46, in the second half before taking the 64-49 win.

 

“Anytime you hold a team to 49 points that is a nice defensive effort,” Nevada head coach Jane Albright said.  “This was exactly the kind of game we needed it was about perseverance.  I thought our shot selection was great and our posts played great defense.” 

 

Criner led all scorers with 20 points on six-of-11 shooting from the floor.  She also went 7-of-7 from the line and recorded just one turnover in 34 minutes. 

 

Franklin added 12 points for Nevada while Moore added her second career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.  Forward Marissa Hammond added seven points while guard Megan Cherry scored a career-high five.

 

The Pack ended the game shooting 36 percent from the floor while the Eagles shot 31 percent.

 

Nevada will travel to Berkeley, Calif., to face #9/9 Cal on Sunday at 2 p.m.  The Pack will return to Lawlor Events Center on Tuesday to host BYU at 7 p.m.
