2008 NOTES

NEVADA PLAYS FIRST OF TWO IN A ROW VERSUS FRESNO STATE
The University of Nevada (7-9, 2-4 WAC) volleyball team will play the first of two consecutive Western Athletic Conference matches versus Fresno State (5-10, 2-4 WAC) on Saturday in Fresno, Calif.  at 2:00 p.m.  The Wolf Pack will play the Bulldogs this Saturday then turn around and host them on the following Thursday in back-to-back matches.  Currently both teams are tied for seventh in the WAC standings with 2-4 records.
Nevada is 10-6 in WAC play versus FS.  Last season the Pack won both matches with the Bulldogs.  The Pack will see two familiar faces on the FS bench in head coach Lauren Netherby-Sewell (1996-99) and assistant coach Alanna Jackson (1997-98) who both played at Nevada.  Jackson was an assistant coach at Nevada last season before accepting the job at FS.

HERNANDEZ CLOSING IN ON HAGGARD:  The Pack’s lone senior, outside hitter/libero Allison Hernandez totaled 36 digs in the last three matches bringing her career total to 946 which ranks ninth all-time at Nevada.  Hernandez needs just eight digs to pass Kerry Haggard’s (1990-92) total of 953 for eighth.  With 54 more digs she would become just the eighth Nevada player to reach 1,000 for her career.

PACK SNAP FIVE-MATCH LOSING SKID VS. BOISE STATE:  Nevada had lost five matches in a row but that all came to an end versus Boise State last Saturday when the Wolf Pack scored a 3-1 victory over the Broncos.  Three of the five losses during the skid came in five sets versus SJSU, Utah State and Idaho.  In all three of those setbacks the Pack led 2-1 after three sets but dropped the final two sets of each match.  With the BSU victory coupled with a nonconference win over Sacramento State on Tuesday the Pack have now won two in a row.  A victory over Fresno State on Saturday would make it three win in a row and equal the team’s longest win streak of the season.

HERNANDEZ AND HARRINGTON TOP TEAM WITH FIVE DOUBLE-DOUBLES:  Senior outside hitter/libero Allison Hernandez and sophomore outside hitter Kylie Harrington lead the Pack with five double-doubles each.  Both had four going into last week and each posted their fifth in two separate matches last week.  Harrington got her fifth on Thursday versus Idaho with 16 kills and 12 digs and Hernandez’ came in the Boise State match on Saturday when she totaled 14 kills and 16 digs.  As a team Nevada has posted 16 double-doubles on the season and the two have combined for 10 of those.  Setters Sonnie Sei and Tatiana Santiago have two each while middle blocker Lindsay Baldwin and outside hitter/libero Nicole Link have one each.

NEVADA FULL OF YOUNGSTERS:  The 2008 Nevada volleyball team continues to be led by underclassmen which make up 63 percent of the roster.  Of the 16 members on the squad 10 are underclassmen.  The 10 breaks down to four sophomores, a red shirt freshman and five true freshmen.  All four sophomores Lindsay Baldwin, Jessica Daum, Kylie Harrington and Nicole Link have see action.  Red shirt freshman Brittni Yates along with three of the true freshmen Erin Garvey, Tatiana Santiago and Kylee Vance have seen action this season.  Taylor Brown and Brittany Woodard are the other two freshmen that are scheduled to redshirt.  Of the 10  Baldwin, Harrington, Link, Yates and Garvey have made starts.

SCRUGGS FOUR WINS FROM 200:  Head coach Devin Scruggs in nearing 200 career wins all coming at Nevada.  In her 12th season she has posted a career mark of 196-142, leaving her four wins shy of 200.  During her tenure the Pack has made five NCAA Tournament appearances in 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005.  The 1998 and 2002 teams won a school record 22 matches.  Since her arrival at Nevada 29 players have earned all-conference honors, 10 first team and 19 second team.  Michelle More in 2002 and Salaia Salave`a in 2005 garnered AVCA All-West Region honors.  Salave`a was an honorable mention All-America selection in 2005.
