RENO, Nev.   Led by sophomore Scott Smith, the University of Nevada’s men’s golf team is tied for seventh after the first day of the 2008 Wolf Pack Classic, being held Monday-Tuesday Oct. 6-7 at the par 72, 7,100-yard Wolf Run Golf Club in Reno.

Nevada turned in rounds of five-over 293 and four-under 284 on Monday to move into a tie for seventh at one-over 577. New Mexico State and Tennessee, which is ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest Golfstat rankings, are tied for the lead in the 13-team tournament after the first day with totals of eight-under 568. The Aggies and Vols hold a one-stroke advantage over Arizona (569), while Fresno State (570) and Kansas State (571) round out the top five teams.

For the Wolf Pack, Smith shot a career-low, seven-under 65 in the second round and is tied for sixth at three-under 141 (76-65). Junior Jared Becher carded a three-under 69 in the first round and a one-over 73 in the second and tied for 10th at two-under 142. Junior Taylor Coffman stands in a tie for 35th after a pair of 73s on Monday (146), while junior Ryan Hallisey is tied for 40th at four-over 148 (75-73). Rounding out the Wolf Pack lineup is senior Matt Rippy who stands in a tie for 62nd at 155 (79-66).

Nevada is also fielding four individuals in the tournament, and that group is led by junior Greg Wenzel who is tied for 10th at two-under 142 (74-68). Wenzel matched his career-low round with a four-under 68 in the second round and is looking for the first top 10 finish of his career. Sophomore Chris Plappert is tied for 58th at 10-over 154 (78-76). Sophomores Kellen Watabu (80-77) and Chris Cho (81-76) are both tied for 68th at 13-over 157.

Wichita State’s Dustin Garza holds the individual lead after the first day, carding a five-under 67 in the first round and a seven-under 65 in the second for a total of 12-under 132. He holds a six-stroke lead over New Mexico State’s Kevin Lozares (69-69=138).

The Wolf Pack Classic concludes on Tuesday. The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Pacific Time at the Wolf Run Golf Course in Reno. There is no admission charge for spectators for the Wolf Pack Classic.
