RENO, Nev. The University of Nevada soccer team fell to Boise State 2-0 in the Pack’s last regular-season home match of the year Sunday afternoon. With the loss, Nevada fell to 2-12-3 overall (2-3-1 WAC) while the Broncos improved to 9-6-2 overall (2-2-1 WAC).
Boise State scored early in the match, scoring what proved to be the game-winning goal in third minute as Shannon Saxton took the ball up the right side of the field and got a cross off. Nevada keeper Marie Cove came out to make the save but Janelle Jin was able to get to the ball first and scored to put the Broncos up 1-0.
Nevada dominated the rest of the first half including good looks by Samantha Miller and Cristen Drummond. In the ninth minute, Miller got played short pass from Miranda Montejo. Miller, seeing the keeper off her line, tried to chip the keeper from just outside the 18-yard box but her attempt was saved by Bronco goalkeeper Liz Ruiz.
In the 21st minute Drummond took the ball down the left side and took her defender on one-on-one. She beat her defender and fired a shot that hit the side netting.
In the second half, Karen Zmirak stripped a Boise State defender of the ball and ripped a left-footed shot from 25-yards out that forced Ruiz to make a diving one-handed save to knock the ball out of bounds for a corner kick.
Boise State added an insurance goal in the 63rd minute as Saxton took the ball endline and dropped it back to Chelsea Robinson who scored a close-range goal to put the Broncos up 2-0.
Nevada ended the game with 14 shots (five on goal) while Boise State finished with six (five on goal). Zmirak, Drummond and Miller each took a game-high three shots for Nevada. Pack keeper Cove made three saves while Ruiz made five for the Broncos.
Nevada will play its final regular-season game at Fresno State on Sunday, November 2 at 2 p.m.
