About Nevada
The University of Nevada soccer team went 0-1-1 over the weekend on the road falling 4-3 at Utah State before recording a 2-2 (2OT) tie at La Tech. Nevada will host Boise State and Idaho this weekend in its final home series of the regular season. The Pack returns 15 letterwinners and nine starters from its 2007 team that recorded its third consecutive WAC Tournament appearance. The Pack welcomes seven newcomers to its 2008 team.
Zmirak Becomes All-Time Leader in Points
With her three points (one goal, one assist) in the game against Utah State on October 17, senior forward Karen Zmirak claimed sole possession of first on Nevada’s all-time point list (45) passing teammate Miranda Montejo (44). With her goal, Zmirak is now tied with Montejo for second all-time in career goals with 17. Kaula Rowe (2000-03) is Nevada’s all-time leader in goals with 18. Zmirak transferred to Nevada in 2006 from Georgia prior to her sophomore season.
Offensive Output
As a team, the Pack scored five goals over the weekend while prior to this weekend’s matches the Pack had scored six goals in 13 games. Nevada scored a season-high three goals at Utah State on October 17 and followed that game with it’s second highest goal total of the season, two goals versus La Tech on October 19. Prior to Nevada’s three goals on October 17 the last time Nevada scored at least three goals in a game was on October 21, 2007 as Nevada beat La Tech at home 4-1.
First Things First
Freshman Ellie Stott recorded her first collegiate goal and assist this weekend. She scored her first goal at Utah State on October 17 before recording her first assist two days later at La Tech setting up teammate Cristen Drummond. Stott is one of two freshmen on this season’s team, along with Annabelle Allen, who have recorded at least one point for Nevada this season. Stott leads the freshmen on the team in points with three while Allen has recorded one.
News and Notes
Samantha Miller became Nevada’s all-time leader in career starts with 72 passing Lauren Kinneman (2003- 06) who recorded 71...Cristen Drummond leads the team in goals with three and Drummond and Samantha Miller (two goals and two assists) are tied for the team lead in points with six each...seven players have started all 15 matches for the Pack this year (Drummond, Miller, Patrice Godwin, Jessica Thompson, Annabelle Allen, Devin Noe and Nikki McEachern)...four difference players recorded points for the Pack this weekend (Cristen Drummond, Karen Zmirak, Ellie Stott and Jill Erickson)...Samantha Miller’s goal against St. Mary’s on October 5 marked Nevada’ first lead this season and also marked the first time Nevada scored a goal in the first half this year...seven of the Pack’s losses this season have been one-goal losses...Nevada will host the WAC Tournament for the second time in program history, November 6-7 &9, 2008 at Mackay Stadium.
Miller Becomes Nevada’s All-Time Leader in Shots
With her six shots against St. Mary’s on October 5, Samantha Miller became Nevada’s all-time leader in shots with 127 passing Lauren Kinneman (2003-06) who recorded 124 career shots. Miller claimed the top spot in the record book in 71 career games while Kinneman reached the top spot in 78 career games. Miller has recorded 15 career goals for Nevada. To date in her career, Miller has taken 135 career shots.
Miller Moves into Tie for Second All-Time in Career Points
With her goal against St. Mary’s on October 5, Samantha Miller is now second all-time in career points (42). Her assist against UC Davis on September 28 gave Miller her 40th career point as she became just the third player in history to record at least 40 career points. She joined teammates Karen Zmirak (45 points) and Miranda Montejo (44 points) as the three players who have recorded at least 40 career points for the Pack. Miller is fourth in career goals with 15 trailing teammates Karen Zmirak (T2nd, 17), Miranda Montejo (T2nd, 17) and Kaula Rowe (2000-03) (1st, 18).
Follow the Leader
Senior Karen Zmirak is first all-time in career points with 45 while senior Miranda Montejo is second with 44. Zmirak and Montejo are also tied for second all-time in career goals (17) and trail only Kaula Rowe (2000-03) who is the career leader with 18. Senior Samantha Miller is tied for second all-time in career points (42). Senior Jessica Thompson is first all-time in assists with 17. Miller has recorded 12 career assists while Montejo had recorded 10.
Assist Queen at it Again
Senior Jessica Thompson recorded her second assist of the season, and program-leading 17th assist of her career, against St. Mary’s on October 5. Thompson recorded her first assist of the season, setting up Samantha Miller at UNLV on August 29. She recorded five assists as a freshman in 2005, five as a sophomore in 2006 and five as a junior in 2007. The assist against UNLV gave Thompson 30 career points making her the sixth player in school history to record at least 30 career points.
Godwin Named a Candidate for Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award
Senior defender Patrice Godwin has been selected as one of the 30 NCAA Division I women’s soccer candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The 30 NCAA Division I women’s soccer players were selected based on their achievements in four areas: classroom, character, community and competition. Godwin, a senior from Reseda, Calif., is a four-year starter on Nevada’s soccer team and is a team captain this season. In July of 2008, she was selected to attend the U23 Select/Amateur National Team Training Camp. She was named to the All-WAC second team in 2007. Godwin led Nevada to its first WAC Tournament Title and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2006. Godwin, an information systems major, was named to the WAC All-Academic team in 2006 and 2007. She has been a part of several volunteer activities during her time at Nevada, including volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in 2005. Godwin has also volunteered at Renown, Nevada’s Soccer Clinic and the Great Basin Youth Soccer League clinic.

A Look at Idaho: Idaho is 1-12-2 overall and 0-2-1 in the WAC. Last week, Idaho fell to Boise State 1-0. The Vandals are led by Nicole McAllister and Jennifer Hull who each have six points. Keeper Liz Boyden has played in 12 games, has allowed 20 goals (1.63 GAA) and has made 63 saves. Idaho is coached by Peter Schowler who is in his fourth season.

All-Time Series: Boise State leads the all-time series 1-6-1.
Last Meeting: The Broncos posted a 3-2 win over the Pack on October 28, 2007 in Boise, Idaho.
A Look at Boise State: Boise State is 8-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in the WAC and are coming off a 1-0 win over Idaho in its only match of the weekend. The Broncos are led by Shannon Saxton (17 points) and Andrea Huerta (12 points). Keeper Jennifer Burns (nine GA, 1.06 GAA, 20 saves) has played in nine games while Liz Ruiz (seven GA, 1.04 GAA, 33 saves) has played in seven. Boise State is coached by Steve Lucas who is in his ninth season.
Montejo Named to the Preseason All-WAC Team
Senior Miranda Montejo was named to the 2008 Preseason All-WAC team for the first time in her career. Montejo, a two-time All-WAC second team selection, has played in 75 career games for Nevada, making 65 starts. Montejo has recorded 17 career goals and 10 career assists. Her selection marks the ninth time a Nevada player has earned Preseason All-WAC honors.
Nevada to Host the 2008 WAC Soccer Tournament
The University of Nevada and Mackay Stadium will host the WAC Soccer Tournament for the second time in program history. The league’s top six teams from the regular season standings will qualify for the conference tournament. This fall will mark the second time Nevada has hosted the conference soccer tournament. The Pack hosted the tournament for the first time in 2006, beating Fresno State in the championship game 4-2 in penalty kicks to win its first WAC Tournament title and qualify for its first NCAA Tournament appearance. Nevada has qualified for the WAC Tournament every season since the program’s first appearance in 2005.
GBYSL Game-Day Information
Thanks to a generous donation to the Nevada soccer program, all members of the Great Basin Youth Soccer League U-14 and younger, will get in free to all of Nevada’s home matches by showing a copy of their GBYSL membership card at the gate or by wearing their uniform to the game. Due to NCAA rules, high school players who play in the GBYSL are not eligible.
Upcoming Schedule
Nevada will play its final regular-season game at Fresno State on November 2. Nevada will host the WAC Tournament November 6-7 and 9 at Mackay Stadium. The league’s top six teams based on their points earned in conference play will qualify for the WAC Tournament with the winner earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
