DENVER Nevada’s Scott Smith and San Jose State’s Erica Moston have been named the Western Athletic Conference Golfers of the Month for September.
Smith, a sophomore from Fallon, Nev. (Churchill County HS), finished in the top five in both of Nevada’s tournaments last month. At the San Francisco Intercollegiate, Sept. 8-9, Smith matched his best career finish with a tie for third after shooting a three-round total of 214 (70-74-70, +1). He then tied for fourth at the Giustina Memorial Classic, Sept. 22-23, in Corvallis, Ore., with a three-under 213 (70-72-71). His play helped Nevada finish in a tie for first as a team. He was at or under par in five of his six rounds in September and had a 71.17 stroke average.
Moston, a senior from Belmont, Calif. (Notre Dame HS), began the season with two top-six finishes in two tournaments played in September. At the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic in Colorado, Sept. 8-9, Moston finished in sixth with a four-under 212 (71-72-69). It was the highest finish by a player from the four WAC teams participating in the tournament. Moston returned to Colorado, Sept. 22-24, for the Ron Moore Intercollegiate and finished third with a six-under par 210 (68-72-70) and helped San Jose State to a third place finish in the 13-team field. Moston shot par or better in all six rounds she played last month and averaged 70.33 strokes per round.
