STANFORD, Calif. - Senior and No. 91 Caroline Bailly advanced to the round of 32 in singles while sophomores Florence De Vrye and Caroline Stevens advanced to the round of 16 in doubles on Friday on the first day of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Regional Championships in Stanford, Calif.
In singles, Bailly, who is seeded No. 15 in the tournament draw, defeated Washington’s Lina Xu 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the second round. Bailly also defeated Portland’s Stephanie Fuchs 6-0, 6-0 in the first round.
De Vrye defeated Washington’s Aleksandra Krsljanin 6-1, 6-2 in the first round. But De Vrye fell to fifth seed and No. 21 ranked Katarina Zheltova of Sacramento State. Stevens defeated Eastern Washington’s Caitlin Bampton 6-2, 6-3 in the first round. However in the second round, Stevens lost to 14th seed and No. 86 ranked Tinesta Rowe of Fresno State.
Also in the first round sophomore Aodhnait Lombard fell to San Francisco’s Jessy Mekpoh 6-2, 6-1. Washington’s Joyce Ardies defeated sophomore Lais Ogata 6-4, 6-3. Freshman Shannon Cassidy lost to Washington State’s Aleksandra Cekic 6-2, 6-0 and freshman Katarina Huba fell to Cal Poly’s Diane Filip 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles action, Stevens and De Vrye defeated San Jose State’s Amber Silverstone and Olivia Marshall 8-3 in the round of 32. Before reaching the round of 32, Stevens and De Vrye defeated Gonzaga’s Radhika Mehndiratta and Danielle Farme 8-4 in the opening round.
Also in doubles, Bailly and Ogata defeated Sacramento State’s Luba Schifris and Aileen Tsan 8-5 in the opening round but fell to Washington’s Venise Chan and Denise Dy 8-0 in the round of 32.
Huba and Cassidy defeated Portland’s Tessa Trunnel and Jenna Tanzer but fell in the second round 8-1 to sixth seed Lindsay Burdette and Carolyn McVeigh of Stanford.
The ITA Regional continues Saturday when Bailly will take on St. Mary’s Sabine Gunnarsson while De Vrye and Stevens will face eight seed Jana Juricova and Marion Ravelojaona of California. De Vrye and Stevens are expected to start at 8 a.m.
