About Nevada
The University of Nevada went 1-1 in its opening weekend of WAC play, beating league favorite Hawai`i 1-0 on Friday before falling to San Jose State 1-0 on Sunday. The Pack will hit the road this weekend for conference games at Utah State on Friday afternoon and at La Tech on Sunday morning. The Pack returns 15 letterwinners and nine starters from its 2007 team that recorded its third consecutive WAC Tournament appearance. The Pack welcomes seven newcomers to its 2008 team.
Defense in the Attack
Of Nevada’s six goals this season, half have been scored by defenders. Defenders Erin Smith (two goals) and Patrice Godwin (one goal) have accounted for three of the Pack’s six goals this year.
Nevada Opens WAC Play With a Win
Nevada opened WAC play with a win for the second time in program history. Nevada also opened the 2005 season with a win over Fresno State. This season, Nevada shutout Hawai`i 1-0 on October 12. The win also marked Nevada’s third straight win over Hawai`i in Reno as Nevada beat Hawai`i twice in Reno during the 2006 season.
Frias Becomes Second Nevada Coach to Record a WAC Win in Frst Year
Jaime Frias became the second coach in Nevada history to record at least one WAC win during his first season as head coach. Antoinette Marjanovic recorded two conference victories during her first year as head coach in 2007.
Miller Moves Into Tie For Second All-Time In Career Points
With her goal against St. Mary’s on October 5, Samantha Miller moved into a tie with teammate Karen Zmirak for second all-time in career points (42). Her assist against UC Davis on September 28 gave Miller her 40th career point as she became just the third player in history to record at least 40 career points. She joined teammates Miranda Montejo (44 points) and Karen Zmirak (42 points) as the three players who have recorded at least 40 career points for the Pack. Miller is fourth in career goals with 15 trailing teammates Karen Zmirak (3rd, 16), Miranda Montejo (2nd, 17) and Kaula Rowe (2000-03) (1st, 18).
News and Notes
Sophomore goalkeeper Marie Cove recorded her first shutout of the season against Hawai`i giving Cove her fourth career shutout...Samantha Miller leads the team in point with six (two goals, two assists)...Miller and Erin Smith share the team lead in goals with two each... Miller’s goal against St. Mary’s marked Nevada’ first lead this season and also marked the first time Nevada has scored a goal in the first half this year...six of the Pack’s losses this season have been one-goal losses...defender Nikki McEachern has played every minute for the Pack this season (1226:00).
Miller Becomes Nevada’s All-Time Leader In Shots
With her six shots against St. Mary’s on October 5, Samantha Miller became Nevada’s all-time leader in shots with 127 passing Lauren Kinneman (2003-06) who recorded 124 career shots. Miller claimed the top spot in the record book in 71 career games while Kinneman reached the top spot in 78 career games. Miller has recorded 15 career goals for Nevada. To date in her career, Miller has taken 131 career shots.
Follow the Leader
Senior Miranda Montejo is the Pack’s all-time leader in points with 44. She is also second all-time in career goals (17) and needs two goals to become Nevada’s all-time leader in goals. Seniors Samantha Miller and Karen Zmirak are tied for second all-time in career points (42). Zmirak is third in career goals (16) while Miller is fourth (15). Senior Jessica Thompson is first all-time in assists with 17. Miller has recorded 12 career assists while Montejo had recorded 10.
Assist Queen at it Again
Senior Jessica Thompson recorded her second assist of the season, and program-leading 17th assist of her career, against St. Mary’s on October 5. Thompson recorded her first assist of the season, setting up Samantha Miller at UNLV on August 29. She recorded five assists as a freshman in 2005, five as a sophomore in 2006 and five as a junior in 2007. The assist against UNLV gave Thompson 30 career points making her the sixth player in school history to record at least 30 career points.
Hunt Records Second Career Shutout
Goalkeeper Sarah Hunt recorded her second career shutout at UW-Green Bay on September 19. She posted her first career shutout in Nevada’s 0-0 (2OT) tie at San Francisco on September 5. She recorded five saves in the game game to help Nevada to the 0-0 (2OT) tie. This season, Hunt has set career-highs in both saves in a match and in a season. Hunt, who played in four games while starting two last season, ended 2007 with 10 saves. This season, she has started 10 games. She has recorded 46 saves in 10 games including a career-high seven versus Pacific and Minnesota.
Zmirak Back at it
Karen Zmirak recorded her 10th career assist on Friday against Minnesota after entering the match as a substitute in the 61st minute. Zmirak, who is second all-time in career points with 42, is two points from tying teammate Miranda Montejo for the most career points all-time.
Godwin Named a Candidate for Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award
Senior defender Patrice Godwin has been selected as one of the 30 NCAA Division I women’s soccer candidates for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. The 30 NCAA Division I women’s soccer players were selected based on their achievements in four areas: classroom, character, community and competition. Godwin, a senior from Reseda, Calif., is a four-year starter on Nevada’s soccer team and is a team captain this season. In July of 2008, she was selected to attend the U23 Select/Amateur National Team Training Camp. She was named to the All-WAC second team in 2007. Godwin led Nevada to its first WAC Tournament Title and an NCAA Tournament berth in 2006. Godwin, an information systems major, was named to the WAC All-Academic team in 2006 and 2007. She has been a part of several volunteer activities during her time at Nevada, including volunteering with Habitat for Humanity in 2005. Godwin has also volunteered at Renown, Nevada’s Soccer Clinic and the Great Basin Youth Soccer League clinic.

A Look at Utah State: The Aggies (7-7-1) went 2-0 over the weekend in WAC play, defeating Idaho 4-0 and Boise State 2-0. Utah State is led by Lauren Hansen (12 points) and Shantel Flanary (nine points). Keeper Ali Griffin has started 14 games and has a 1.12 GAA with 56 saves. The Aggies are coached by Heather Carins who is in her fifth season.

All-Time Series: Nevada leads the all-time series with La Tech, 3-0.
Last Meeting: The Pack posted a 4-1 home victory over La Tech on October 21, 2007.
A Look at La Tech: La Tech is 10-2-3 overall and recorded two ties over the weekend at Boise State and Idaho. Olivia Lukasewich leads the team in points with 19 while Kristen Sevier is second on the team with 17. Keeper Cat Buchanan has started a team-high six games and has a 0.49 GAA and has made 29 saves. La Tech is coached by Kevin Sherry who is in his second season.
Montejo Named to the Preseason All-WAC Team
Senior Miranda Montejo was named to the 2008 Preseason All-WAC team for the first time in her career. Montejo, a two-time All-WAC second team selection, has played in 73 career games for Nevada, making 64 starts. Montejo has recorded 17 career goals and 10 career assists. Her selection marks the ninth time a Nevada player has earned Preseason All-WAC honors.
Nevada to Host the 2008 WAC Soccer Tournament
The University of Nevada and Mackay Stadium will host the WAC Soccer Tournament for the second time in program history. The league’s top six teams from the regular season standings will qualify for the conference tournament. This fall will mark the second time Nevada has hosted the conference soccer tournament. The Pack hosted the tournament for the first time in 2006, beating Fresno State in the championship game 4-2 in penalty kicks to win its first WAC Tournament title and qualify for its first NCAA Tournament appearance. Nevada has qualified for the WAC Tournament every season since the program’s first appearance in 2005.
GBYSL Game-Day Information
Thanks to a generous donation to the Nevada soccer program, all members of the Great Basin Youth Soccer League U-14 and younger, will get in free to all of Nevada’s home matches by showing a copy of their GBYSL membership card at the gate or by wearing their uniform to the game. Due to NCAA rules, high school players who play in the GBYSL are not eligible.

Nevada will host its last home matches of the regualr season, hosting Idaho and Boise State. The Pack will face Idaho on Friday, October 24 at 7 p.m. and will take on Boise State on Sunday, October 26 at 1 p.m.
