RENO, Nev. The University of Nevada soccer team couldn’t overcome an early goal by San Jose State as the Pack fell to the Spartans 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Mackay Stadium. With the loss, Nevada fell to 1-10-2 (1-1 WAC) while Spartans improved to 3-7-1 (1-1 WAC).
In the first minute of the game Nevada’s Ellie Stott recorded the Pack’s first shot of the game. Samantha Miller played the ball from midfield to Cristen Drummond. Drummond took the ball up field, cut in and crossed the ball to Stott who’s low, driven shot was blocked by San Jose State keeper Nina Butera.
San Jose State took a 1-0 lead in the 3rd minute as Stephanie Righetti played Emmy Belding through the Nevada defense. Belding hit a shot far post that beat Nevada keeper Marie Cove to the far post as the Spartans took an early 1-0 lead.
In the 19th minute Miranda Montejo played Miller wide on the right. Miller took a few touches and fired a shot that was punched up off the cross bar by Butera. In the 47th minute, Miller played Montejo in behind the Spartan defense. Montejo hit a one-touch pass into Karen Zmirak who took a few touches and fired a shot from inside the six-yard box. But, Zmirak’s close-range attempt was blocked out of bounds by Butera for a Nevada corner.
In the 87th minute the Pack had a good look off a Nevada corner kick from Zmirak. Off the corner kick, Miller played the ball wide to Montejo on the right. Montejo crossed the ball and Zmirak went up for the header but Butera came up with the save.
Nevada ended the game with 14 shots (six on goal) while San Jose State ended the game with nine (two on goal). Miller and Zmirak each recorded four shots. Cove ended the game with one save while Butera made six.
Nevada will continue WAC play on the road next week at Utah State and La Tech. Nevada will play at Utah State on Friday, October 17 at 2 p.m. PT and will face La Tech in Ruston, La. on Sunday, October 19 at 10 a.m. PT.
