SANTA CRUZ, Calif.   Led by freshman Taylor Coffman, the University of Nevada men’s golf team is in sixth place after the first two rounds of the 61st annual Western Intercollegiate, being held Monday and Tuesday at the par 70, 6,432-yard Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz.

Nevada shot a four-over 284 in the first round and an 11-over 291 in the second and is in sixth place in the 18-team tournament with a two-round total of 575 heading into Tuesday’s final round. The Wolf Pack is just one stroke out of fifth place and 13 out of the lead of Purdue. The Boilermakers turned in rounds of one-under 279 and three-over 283 for a first-day total of 562 and hold a two-stroke lead over second-place Long Beach State (283-281=564). Fresno State is in third place after the first two rounds (566), followed by Washington (573), Hawai’i (574) and Nevada (575).

Coffman was the top Nevada finisher after the first two rounds and is tied for 17th at two-over 142. He carded a two-over 72 in the first round and an even par 70 in the second. Sophomore Matt Rippy is tied for 24th at three-over 143 after carding a 70 and a 73 on Monday. Junior James Haban is tied for 29 at four-over 144 (70-74), freshman Ryan Hallisey is in a tie for 40th (72-74=146) and junior Chase Cooper is tied for 47th (73-75=148).

Long Beach State’s Brett Lederer leads the Western Intercollegiate with a two-round total of seven-under 133. He holds a one-stroke lead over Purdue’s Pariya Junhasavasdikul (66-68=134).

The Western Intercollegiate concludes on Tuesday with the final round beginning at 8 a.m. Pacific Time.
