About This Game

Nevada will play its first road game of the season in Cheney, Wash., against the Eastern Washington Eagles.  The Pack is 1-3 all-time in road openers under head coach Kim Gervasoni with the Pack’s win coming last season at San Diego State.  While Eastern Washington leads the all-time series 12-2, the Pack has never faced the Eagles under Gervasoni.  Nevada will be looking for its first-ever win over Eastern Washington on the road.     

 

About the Nevada Wolf Pack

Nevada fell to 1-1 on the season after falling to San Diego State, 67-61, on Nov. 11.  Cherlanda Franklin scored a team-high 12 points for Nevada and added a team-high seven boards. Nevada opened the 2007-08 season on Nov. 9 with a 62-51 win at home over Santa Clara.  Mikail Price scored a career-high 22 points for the Pack while Shavon Moore added 10.  The Pack won its only exhibition game of the season Nov. 3, posting a 68-40 win over Sonoma State.  Dellena Criner (18 points) and Johnna Ward (10 points) each scored in double figures for Nevada.  Nevada finished the 2006-07 season 17-15 overall and 10-6 in the WAC and advanced to the WNIT for the first time in program history.  The Pack is coached by Kim Gervasoni who is in her fifth season with Nevada and has a 42-81 overall record with the Pack.    

 

About the Eastern Washington Eagles

Eastern Washington won its season opener at home on Nov. 11, beating Montana Tech, 63-48.  Katy Baker (18 points) led three Eagle players in double-figures as Eastern  Washington improved to 1-0 this season.  Eastern Washington finished last season 10-19 and 5-11 in the Big Sky Conference.  The Eagles are coached by Wendy Schuller.

News and Notes

Nevada won its season-opening game for the second consecutive season beating Santa Clara 62-51 at home on Nov. 9...the win also marks the third time under fifth-year head coach Kim Gervasoni that Nevada won its season opener...senior Mikail Price came off the bench against Santa Clara and scored a career-high 22 points...Price's previous career high was 14 points against Cal Poly on Nov. 11, 2006...four of Nevada's freshmen (Shavon Moore, Johnna Ward, Jennifer Gross and Nicole Williams) have made their debut for Nevada this season while Shavon Moore has started both of Nevada's games this season...the Pack has scored at least 60 points in each of its first two games this season...Nevada has had a different top scorer in each of its first two games this season (Mikail Price scored 22 points against Santa Clara while Cherlanda Franklin scored 12 versus San Diego State).

 

Nevada in the WAC Stats

Mikail Price is tied for eighth in the WAC stats in points per game (14.5)...Marianne Lombardi is tied for first in field goal percent (.667)...Brandi Fitzgerald is tied for first in free throw percent (1.000)...Price is tied for fifth in assists per game (2.0)...Price is also second in steals per game (4.0), while Fitzgerald is seventh (2.50) and Cherlanda Franklin is tied for eighth (2.00)...as a team Nevada is second in free throw percentage (.617) and is first in steals (31, 15.50 per game).

 

Price Is Right

Junior Mikail Price came off the bench to score 22 points in Nevada’s 62-51 win over Santa Clara.  Price was 5-of-16 from the field and 3-for-7 from three-point range.  She also shot 75 percent (9-of-12) from the free throw line.  Prior to this game, Price’s career high was 14 points against Cal Poly on Nov. 11, 2006.  She scored seven  points against San Diego State on Nov. 11 and is leading the team, averaging 14.5 points per game. 

 

Give Me Some Moore

Freshman Shavon Moore made the most of her first career start on Nov. 9 versus Santa Clara.  She scored 10 points, including a 6-for-10 performance from the free throw line.  She is one of four Nevada freshmen to see playing time this season but is the only freshman to start for the Pack.

Friday vs. Santa Clara

Junior Mikail Price came off the bench and scored a career high 22 points while freshman Shavon Moore added 10 as the University of Nevada women's basketball team beat Santa Clara 62-51 in Nevada's season opener Friday night at Lawlor Events Center.  Marianne Lombardi was 4-for-4 from the field and ended the game with eight points and two rebounds.  As a team, the Pack finished the game shooting 40 percent (6-for-15) from three point range with Price leading the way with three.  Price also ended the game 9-of-12 from the free throw line.  

 

Sunday vs. San Diego State

The San Diego State women's basketball team had three players score in double figures as the Aztecs posted a 67-61 victory over Nevada Sunday afternoon at Lawlor Events Center. Cherlanda Franklin recorded a team-high for Nevada in both points, 12, and rebounds seven.  She was also 2-for-2 from three-point range.  Marianne Lombardi ended the game with eight points, including six in the second half. 

 

Nevada in Season Openers Under Gervasoni

Nevada improved to 3-2 in season openers under head coach Kim Gervasoni with Nevada’s win over Santa Clara Friday night.  The Pack fell at San Diego 96-74 in its season opener in 2003 before winning its season-opening game against Cal State Fullerton, 71-56, at home in 2004.  Portland State edged Nevada, 65-61, in Portland, Ore. in 2005.  Nevada won its season opener at home in 2006 against Cal Poly, 76-62 and this season, the Pack beat Santa Clara 62-51 on Nov. 9, 2007. 

 

Newcomer’s Debut

Shavon Moore, Johnna Ward and Jennifer Gross all saw playing time in Nevada’s  season opener Friday night.  Moore started for Nevada and recorded 10 points while Ward played 14 minutes and recorded two steals.  Gross scored two points and added three rebounds in 18 minutes.  Freshman Nicole Williams made her collegiate debut for Nevada in Nevada’s loss versus San Diego State on Sunday.  All five newcomers on Nevada’s roster this season saw playing time in the Pack’s 68-40 exhibition win over Sonoma State.  Ward played 19 minutes and scored 10 points while recording a team-high four steals.  Moore scored nine points while playing 12 minutes.  Gross scored four points on 2-for-6 from the field in 14 minutes, while Megan Cherry and Williams each played six minutes in the Pack’s exhibition win. 

 

Nevada to Have Three Home Games Televised

After playing in its first nationally-televised game last season, the Pack will play in three televised contests this season.  KAME will broadcast the final game of the Nugget Classic on Dec. 2 and will also televise the Nevada/New Mexico State game on January 26.  Both games will be shown on a tape-delay basis with the Nugget 

Classic Championship game being shown at 7 p.m. PT and the New Mexico State game being aired at 8 p.m. PT.  CSTV will broadcast the Nevada/Hawaii game from Reno on January 12.

 

A Look Back

The University of Nevada women's basketball team enjoyed a very successful 2006-07 season in which the team posted a 17-15 overall record and advanced to post-season play for the first-time in school history.  Nevada also finished with its highest ever win total in WAC play (10-6), including its first-ever win over La Tech.  Nevada started the season 3-0, its best start in 25 years and had three players earn All-WAC honors at the end of the season.  Dellena Criner was named to the All-WAC First Team, the All-WAC Defensive Team and to the WAC All-Tournament team while Traci Graham was named to the All-WAC Second Team.  Marianne Lombardi was named to the All-Freshman Team marking the third consecutive season Nevada had a freshman named to the All-Freshman Team.

 

Nevada Picked Second, Third in WAC Preseason Polls

The University of Nevada women’s basketball team has been picked to finish second in the WAC Preseason Coaches Poll and third in the Media Poll.  Nevada, who received one first-place vote in each poll, also had two players named to the Preseason All-WAC Teams.  Junior guard Dellena Criner was named to the First Team while junior guard Brandi Fitzgerald was named to the Second Team.  Criner was also named to the Preseason All-WAC Media team. 

 

Upcoming Schedule

Nevada will face Gonzaga in Spokane, Washington on Sunday at Noon.  Nevada will play at UTEP in the UTEP Thanksgiving Tournament in El Paso, Texas on Nov. 23 and 24.
