ABOUT THIS GAME

Nevada will look to open the season 2-0 when the Pack hosts the San Diego State Aztecs Sunday at 2 p.m. at Lawlor Events Center. While the all-time series between the two schools is tied at 2-2, Nevada has won the last two meetings, 68-62 in San Diego, Calif., last season and 74-55 in Reno during the 2004-05 season, and is 1-0 versus the Aztecs at home.

 

ABOUT THE NEVADA WOLF PACK

Nevada opened the 2007-08 season Friday night with a 62-51 win at home over Santa

Clara. Mikail Price scored a career-high 22 points for the Pack while Shavon Moore added 10. The Pack won its only exhibition game of the season Nov. 3, posting a 68-

40 win over Sonoma State. Dellena Criner (18 points) and Johnna Ward (10 points) each scored in double figures for Nevada. Nevada, who finished last season 17-15 overall and 10-6 in the WAC, returns nine players from last season's WNIT team, including starters Criner, Andrea Sitton and Brandi Fitzgerald. Five newcomers, one sophomore transfer and four high school players, will also join Nevada this season. The Pack is coached by Kim Gervasoni who is in her fifth season with Nevada and has a 42-80 overall record with the Pack.

 

ABOUT THE SAN DIEGO STATE AZTECS

San Diego State will play its season-opening game at Nevada Sunday afternoon. The

Aztecs played one exhibition games this season, beating Love & Basketball, 85-67, Thursday night in San Diego, Calif. Quenese Davis led all scorers with 18 points while

Paris Johnson added 13. The Aztecs return seven players and four starters from their 2006-07 team that finished 12-16 overall and 5-11 in the Mountain West Conference.

San Diego State is coached by Beth Burns.

Fans middle school and under will have an opportunity to meet with coaches of the women’s basketball team and go over different in-game strategies and plays. The event will take place in the Lawlor Events Center Silver Room A and will start at approximately 1:05 p.m.

NEVADA IN SEASON OPENERS UNDER GERVASONI

Nevada improved to 3-2 in season openers under head coach Kim Gervasoni with Nevada’s win over Santa Clara Friday night. The Pack fell at San Diego 96-74 in its season opener in 2003 before winning its season-opening game against Cal State Fullerton, 71-56, at home in 2005. Portland State edged Nevada, 65-61, in Portland, Ore. in 2005. Nevada won its season opener at home in 2006 against Cal Poly, 76-62 and this season, beating Santa Clara 62-51 on Nov. 9, 2007.

 

PRICE IS RIGHT

Junior Mikail Price came off the bench to score 22 points in Nevada’s 62-51 win over

Santa Clara. Price was 5-of-16 from the field and 3-for-7 from three-point range. She also shot 75 percent (9-of-12) from the free throw line. Prior to this game, Price’s then career high was 14 points against Cal Poly on Nov. 11, 2006.

 

GIVE ME SOME MOORE

Freshman Shavon Moore made the most of her first career start on Nov. 9 versus Santa Clara. She scored 10 points, including a 6-for-10 performance from the free throw line. She was one of three Nevada freshmen to see playing time.

 

EXHIBITION RECAP

Junior Dellena Criner and freshman Johnna Ward each scored in double figures Saturday night to lead the Nevada women’s basketball team past Sonoma State 68- 40 in an exhibition game. Nevada, who never trailed in the game, jumped out to a 6- 0 lead with Criner scoring four of the Pack’s first six points in the game. Nevada went on an 11-0 run to push the score to 23-9 with 7:43 left in the first half. Nevada shot 42 percent (14-for-33) from the floor in the first half, and shot 57 percent (4-for-7) from three point range to take a 36-21 lead at the half. The Pack’s defense held the Seawolves to 16 percent (3-for-18) shooting in the first half and forced Sonoma State to commit 13 first-half turnovers. The Pack’s aggressive defense continued in the second half as Nevada went on a 14-0 run in the second half, increasing its lead to 61-34. Criner finished the game with a game-high 18 points, shooting 5-5 from the floor and 2-2 from behind the arc. Ward, a native of Spring Creek, Nev., and one of five Pack newcomers to see playing time, was Nevada’s second-leading scorer with 10 points. She also ended with a game-high four steals. Freshman Shavon Moore, who scored nine points, and sophomore Marianne Lombardi each pulled down a team-high six rebounds as the Pack out rebounded the Seawolves 47-35.

 

NEWCOMERS DEBUT

Shavon Moore, Johnna Ward and Jennifer Gross all saw playing time in Nevada’s season opener Friday night. Moore started for Nevada and recorded 10 points while Ward played 14 and recorded two steals. Gross scored two points and added three rebounds in 18 minutes. All five newcomers on Nevada’s roster this season saw playing time in the Pack’s 68-40 exhibition win over Sonoma State. Johnna Ward played 19 minutes and scored 10 points while recording a team-high four steals. Shavon Moore scored nine points while playing 12 minutes. Jennifer Gross scored four points on 2-for-6 from the field in 14 minutes, while Megan Cherry and Nicole Williams each played six minutes in the Pack’s win.

 

NEVADA TO HAVE THREE HOME GAMES TELEVISED

After playing in its first nationally-televised game last season, the Pack will play in three televised contests this season. KAME will broadcast the final game of the Nugget Classic on Dec. 2 and will also televise the Nevada/New Mexico State game on January 26. Both games will be shown on a tape-delay basis with the Nugget Classic Championship game being shown at 7 p.m. PT and the New Mexico State game being aired at 8 p.m. PT. CSTV will broadcast the Nevada/Hawaii game from Reno on January 12.

 

NEVADA PICKED SECOND, THIRD IN WAC PRESEASON POLLS

The University of Nevada women’s basketball team has been picked to finish second

in the WAC Preseason Coaches Poll and third in the Media Poll. Nevada, who received one first-place vote in each poll, also had two players named to the Preseason All-WAC Teams. Junior guard Dellena Criner was named to the First Team while junior guard Brandi Fitzgerald was named to the Second Team. Criner was also named to the preseason All-WAC Media team.

 

A LOOK BACK

The University of Nevada women's basketball team enjoyed a very successful 2006-07 season in which the team posted a 17-15 overall record and advanced to post-season play for the first-time in school history. Nevada also finished with its highest ever win total in WAC play (10-6), including its first-ever win over La Tech. Nevada started the season 3-0, its best start in 25 years and had three players earn All-WAC honors at the end of the season. Dellena Criner was named to the All-WAC First Team, the WAC All-Defensive Team and to the WAC All-Tournament team while Traci Graham was named to the All-WAC Second Team. Marianne Lombardi was named to the All-Freshman Team marking the third consecutive season Nevada had a freshman named to the All-Freshman Team.

 

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

Nevada will travel to the state of Washington to take on Eastern Washington on Nov.

15 and Gonzaga on Nov. 17. Nevada will face the Eagles on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and will take on the Bulldogs on Sunday at Noon.
