PORTLAND, Ore. Sophomore Miranda Montejo’s (Riverside, Calif.) third goal of the season gave Nevada a 1-0 victory over Portland State Sunday afternoon at PGE Park. With the win Nevada improved to 6-2-1 while Portland fell to 0-8-1. The win keeps Nevada unbeaten on the road (4-0-1).
Montejo scored the game’s only goal in the 22nd minute off an assist from senior Aivi Luik (Goldcoast, Australia). Senior Lauren Kinneman (Sammamish, Wash.) took the ball down the left flank and crossed it to Luik on the right side. Luik hit a short pass to Montejo who tapped the ball into the net for the game-winner.
In a game in which all of Nevada’s players saw playing time, the Wolf Pack outshot Portland State 18-7 in the match with Nevada recording eight shots on goal while the Vikings only recorded one. Junior Kenishia Warren (Terrigal, New South Wales, Australia) and sophomore Samantha Miller (Riverside, Calif. ) each had a second half shot that hit the post. Sophomore Karen Zmirak (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) led Nevada with three shots, all of which were on goal.
“This was a good, gritty performance,” said Nevada head coach Terri Patraw. “This was a great weekend for us. This was a good game for us today after a great game on Friday.”
Nevada goalie junior Jen Mavis (Sparks, Nev.) recorded her first career shutout for the Pack in just her third career start. Mavis recorded one save against the Vikings while Portland State goalie Rachel Jarvis made eight.
Nevada travels to Albuquerque, N.M. on Sept. 29 and Oct. 1 to play in the New Mexico Tournament. The Pack will face Northern Arizona on Friday 3 p.m. Pacific and will take on New Mexico on Sunday at 2 p.m. Pacific.
