The University of Nevada’s soccer team’s 1-0 victory over Wisconsin-Green Bay Friday night not only extended the Wolf Pack’s home unbeaten streak to 10, but the win also marked the first time in Nevada soccer history a team opened the season 2-0. The Wolf Pack improve to 2-0 while UWGB fall to 1-1.
For the second consecutive match sophomore Karen Zmirak (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) scored Nevada’s game-winning goal in the 59th minute off assists from freshman Devin Noe (Simi Valley, Calif.) and sophomore Samantha Miller (Riverside, Calif.). Noe played the ball out of the back to Miller who found Zmirak. Zmirak drew two UWGB defenders, cut left beating both defenders, and hit a left-footed blast into the top of the net past UWGB keeper Brooke Wikgren.
Nevada outshot UWGB 15-5 in the match and held the Phoenix shot less until the second half. Nevada’s Miller recorded a game-high five shots while five different Phoenix players recorded one.
Wolf Pack keeper Caitlin Holmes (Las Flores, Calif.) recorded her second career shutout in as many matches, while recording two saves. Wikgren made nine saves for UWGB and allowed one goal.
Nevada returns to action Sunday afternoon facing Northern Iowa at 2 p.m. at Mackay Stadium.
