BOX SCORE
RENO, Nev. The University of Nevada soccer team lost a 1-0 game against UC Davis Sunday afternoon at Mackay Stadium. With the loss Nevada fell to 4-2-1 while UC Davis improved to 5-1.
The Aggies scored the game-winner in the 29th minute after a Nevada defensive miscue led to a UC Davis indirect free kick from 12 yards out. The Wolf Pack wall deflected the initial shot from Katie Snyder but teammate Julia Gamlen collected the rebound and beat Nevada keeper junior, Jen Mavis (Sparks, Nev.), to the lower corner.
Mavis, who made her first career start against the Aggies, played the full 90 minutes in goal for Nevada and made two saves. UC Davis goalie Megan Daws recorded four saves in 90 minutes.
The Wolf Pack outshot UC Davis 9-7 in the game including a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal. Aggie Dayna Dumont took a game-high three shots, while sophomore Karen Zmirak (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) and senior Lauren Kinneman (Sammamish, Wash.) each recorded two for Nevada.
In the 41st minute junior Jessica Wilcox (Phoenix, Ariz.) hit a one-time shot, from sophomore Jessica Thompson’s (Ogden, Utah) corner kick, that went high. With one minute left in the game, Zmirak flicked the ball to sophomore Randee Robinson (Port Orchard, Wash.) who took the ball into the Aggie box but Robinson got tangled up in the box with a UC Davis defender and lost possession.
“We are not playing intelligent soccer right now,” said Nevada head coach Terri Patraw. “The goal we gave up was unacceptable. UC Davis executed on its only chance of the game and we didn’t execute on our opportunities.”
Nevada will face Oregon on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. in Eugene. On Sunday, Sept. 24 the Pack will take on Portland State at 1 p.m. in Portland.
