DENVER - Nevada freshman guard Brandi Fitzgerald was named WAC Freshman of the Year and was joined by teammate Dellena Criner on the All-WAC Freshman Team. Fitzgerald, from Moreno Valley, Calif., was the Pack's leading scorer (10.8), tops in steals (57), second in rebounding (4.8) and third in assists (37). Criner, from Oakland, Calif., played in all 28 games and started the second half of the season in topping the club in assists (53) as well as in three-point percentage (.364) in addition to being the sixth-leading scorer (6.3).
The duo helped Nevada to a fourth-place tie in the WAC with an 8-8 league record and a 12-16 over-all mark. The 8-8 mark is the best for Nevada since their first year in the league, 2000-01, when they went 9-7.
Nevada opens WAC Tournament play in Reno at their own Lawlor Events Center Wednesday, March 8 at 6 p.m. against fourth-seeded San Jose State, who Nevada tied for fourth in the conference. The Spartans got the higher seed by virtue of winning both meetings against Nevada.
