FRESNO, Calif. The University of Nevada soccer team fell 2-0 at Fresno State Friday night in the conference opener for both teams. With the loss, Nevada drops to 7-3-2 overall and 0-1 in the WAC, while Fresno improves to 7-4-1 and 1-0 in conference play.
The Wolf Pack had a good chance to get on the board in the sixth minute when sophomore Randee Robinson (Port Orchard, Wash.) connected with sophomore Jessica Thompson’s (Ogden, Utah) corner kick and headed the ball on frame which forced Bulldog keeper Angie Larsen to make a save. Nevada’s forwards got behind the Fresno defense as the Pack had three breakaways during the game, but were unable to finish any of their chances.
“Our energy level was flat but at the end of the day it was our execution that hurt us the most,” said Nevada head coach Terri Patraw. “Fresno had two good looks and buried them both.”
The game remained scoreless until the 65th minute when Antonea Lugo scored an unassisted goal from 25 yards out. Lugo added her second goal of the match in the 72nd minute off a cross from Christina Gilbert.
The Bulldogs outshot the Pack 8-6 in the game but Nevada held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. Senior Lauren Kinneman (Sammamish, Wash.) and sophomore Karen Zmirak (Oakville, Ontario, Canada) led the Pack with two shots each. Junior goalie Jen Mavis (Sparks, Nev.) made two saves for Nevada.
After five consecutive games on the road, Nevada returns to Mackay Stadium on Oct. 13 and 15. The Pack will face Boise State on Friday at 7 p.m. and Idaho Sunday at Noon.
