Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(1-3) led 13th ranked UCLA in game five 14-9 but were unable to get the final point and fell 16-14 to the Bruins in the final match of the 2005 Sands Regency/SBC Tournament on Saturday night at the Virginia Street Gym in Reno, Nev. The Wolf Pack lost by scores of 26-30, 30-22, 26-30, 31-29, and 14-16 leaving them at 1-3 on the season and 1-2 in the tournament which landed them third place. UCLA improved to 3-0 on the season and claimed the tournament title sweeping the competition over the weekend. The 18th ranked San Diego Toreros took second with a 2-1 mark while Eastern Kentucky went winless on the weekend at 0-3.
After Nevada forced a fifth game by winning game four 31-29 the Wolf Pack broke a 7-7 tie in the final game by scoring five unanswered points to go in front 12-7. Nevada led 14-9 before UCLA mounted the comeback. The Bruins got a kill from Rachell Johnson then Meghan Schoen served the next six points as UCLA rallied to win 16-14. Kaitlin Sather completed the comeback with a kill to score the final point of the match. Both teams hit .120 in the final game.
Game one of the match was a close one as it was tied 12 times and there were six lead changes. With the game tied at 23-23 UCLA put together a 4-0 run on the way to the 30-26 victory. The Bruins hit .212 and the Pack just .050 in the opening game.
Nevada scored the first point in game two and never trailed in downing the Bruins 30-22 to even the match at one game apiece. The Pack had their best hitting game of the night connecting on .405 of their attempts while UCLA hit .190.
The third game was tied at 18-18 before UCLA scored the next four points to take the lead for good. The Bruins won the third game 30-26 and held a two games to one advantage. Nevada did out hit UCLA in the third game .306 to .250 but the Bruins prevailed.
The Wolf Pack turned the tables in game four as UCLA out hit them .341 to .191 but Nevada claimed the victory 31-29 to force the deciding fifth game. UCLA broke a 27-27 tie by scoring two unanswered points only to have Nevada score the final four points to take the game setting up the exciting but disappointing finish for the Pack in the final game.
Junior outside hitter Carly Sorensen posted a match and career high 22 kills on the night and hit .226. Salaia Salave`a, Teal Ericson, and Karly Sipherd finished with 18, 14, and 10 kills respectively as four Pack players reached double figures. Setter Tristin Adams dished out a match high 57 assists and Lindsay Holda had a match high 15 digs. Salave`a added 14 digs to finish with a double-double while Johnson also finished the night with a double-double contributing 11 digs. Libero Christine Harms contributed 13 digs on the night.
Sather led UCLA with 20 kills and added 10 digs to post a double-double. Nana Meriwether, Johnson, and Colby Lyman finished with 14, 13, and 11 kills respectively. Setter Nellie Spicer had 53 assists on the night. Lyman had 12 digs to finish with a double-double. Jordan Smith reached double digits in digs finishing with 11.
The Pack hit .221 on the night while UCLA finished with a .232 attack percentage. The Bruins won the blocking battle 15-12. Sipherd, and Salave`a had five blocks each to top the Pack.
Sorensen, and Salave`a were named to the all-tournament team from Nevada. Lyman was named the MVP and Meriwether was also selected to the squad from UCLA. Christie Dawson, and Kristen Carlson were selected from the second place San Diego while Liz Guard from Eastern Kentucky rounded out the all-tournament team.
Nevada returns to action next weekend when they travel to Sacramento, Calif. to compete in the Sacramento State Invitational. The Pack take on Sacramento State on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Saturday's matches are against Loyola Marymount at 12:30 p.m. and Columbia at 5:00 p.m.
