Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(4-5) improved to 4-5 on the season and 2-0 in the Circus Circus/Molten Invitational being played at the Virginia Street Gym in Reno, Nev. by downing Akron(5-6) 3-1 on Saturday morning. The Wolf Pack won by scores of 30-14, 27-30, 30-19, and 30-22. The Zips fell to 0-2 in invitational and 5-6 on the season.
With the first game tied at 1-1 junior outside hitter Carly Sorensen served seven straight points and Nevada held an 8-1 advantage on the way to the easy 30-14 victory. The first three Sorensen serves resulted in aces. The Pack hit .545 and held Akron to a negative .069 attack percentage.
The Zips jumped all over Nevada in game two taking a seven point lead at 10-3. The Pack closed within a point but were unable to catch Akron falling 30-27 as the match was evened at a game apiece. Akron out hit Nevada .279 to .244 in game two.
Following the break the Pack were looking to take control of the match. With game three tied at 2-2 Nevada setter Ashley Miller served four consecutive winning points to put the Pack in front for good at 6-2 as they went on to win 30-19. The Wolf Pack hit .314 compared to Akron's .103 attack percentage.
In game four Nevada scored the first point and never trailed in winning 30-22 to take the match 3-1. The Wolf Pack finished game four with a .256 attack percentage and Akron hit .069.
Senior Salaia Salave`a had a match high 23 kills, and hit .425 in the match. Karly Sipherd, and Sorensen totaled 13, and 11 kills respectively. Libero Christine Harms, and defensive specialist Lindsay Holda led the Pack with 12, and 10 digs respectively. Miller dished out a match high 54 assists.
Jennifer Stewart led Akron with 18 kills and 12 digs to post a double-double. Rachel Rush led the Zips with 32 assists.
Nevada hit .312 in the match and Akron .115. Both teams finished with seven blocks. Sipherd, and Sorensen had three blocks each to top the Wolf Pack.
The Pack conclude the invitational by taking on Montana State at 5:00 p.m. A Pack victory would give them the invitational title and even their overall record at 5-5.
