Reno, Nev. - The University of Nevada(1-4) dropped its opening match of the Sacramento State(3-5) Invitational to the host Sacramento State Hornets in four games Friday night at the Hornets Nest. The Wolf Pack lost by scores of 22-30, 35-33, 27-30, and 25-30 leaving the team 1-4 on the season while the Hornets improved to 3-5.

The first game was tied five times with the last one coming at 8-8 before the Hornets scored the next five points and went on to win 30-22. The Pack hit terrible finishing with a .075 attack percentage while Sac State hit .400.

Game two featured 16 ties and five lead changes. With the game tied at 33-33 Karly Sipherd, and Tristin Johnson combined on a block to put the Pack in front 34-33. Johnson followed the block with kill to give Nevada the 35-33 victory to even the match at one game apiece. The Pack hit an outstanding .378 and held CSUS to a .200 attack percentage.

The third game was again a close affair with the two teams being tied at 25-25. The Hornets put together a 3-0 run and won 30-27. Nevada was not as fortunate as they were in game two hitting .233 while CSUS connected on .326 percentage of their attacks.

CSUS was looking to end the match in game four breaking a 10-10 tie by scoring the next three points and went on to build a seven point lead at 22-15. The Pack closed within three points at 25-22 but were unable to get any closer falling 30-25 as the Hornets won the match 3-1. Nevada hit just .125 in the final game while the Hornets hit .256.

Senior Salaia Salave`a posted her third double-double of the season finishing with a match high 24 kills,and contributed 15 digs. Junior Carly Sorensen reached double figures in kills for the fifth time in as many matches this season finishing with 18. Sophomore Teal Ericson was the third Pack player to tally double figures in kills finishing with 15. Johnson dished out a match and season high 60 assists on the night. Libero Christine Harms had a match high 17 digs while senior Lindsay Holda totaled 11 digs in the match.

 
 

Four Sac State players reached double figures in kills led by Shannon Roland, and Lindsay Haupt who had 16 each. Atlee Hubbard, and Shannon Arts had 13 kills apiece. Natalie Melcher had 50 assists and 12 digs in the match to record a double-double. Hubbard also posted a double-double in the match as she had 10 digs to go along with her 13 kills. Kristin Lutes(16), and Mallory Hook(11) also reached double figures in digs on the night.

CSUS outhit the Pack .286 to .202 and won the blocking battle 16-12. Sipherd, and Salave`a had six blocks each to lead the Pack.

Saturday's tournament matches for Nevada are against Loyola Marymount at 12:30 p.m. and Columbia at 5:00 p.m.
