Reno, Nev. - For the second straight week, the University of Nevada women's basketball team scored more than 80 points in an exhibition game when it defeated Sonoma State 81-55 at Lawlor Events Center Saturday. Nevada defeated both of its exhibition opponents with its win over the Seawolves proving as its final tune-up before the start of the regular season.
The game was the first in a double-header with the men's team and drew some 1,047 Wolf Pack faithful fans to see an up-tempo, well-executed win over the visiting SSU. Nevada opened the game with the first two points and led the rest of the way. While the Pack let it get close a couple of times, they played strong, especially in the second half to seal the victory.
The Pack kept it even with four players scoring in double figures. Nevada as a team shot 47.9 percent from the field, hitting on 3-8 from beyond the arc. Nevada's new, reinvigorated post play dominated at the glass taking a 46-44 rebound advantage and tallying all six of the games blocks. The Wolf Pack's defense was also on fire, holding the Seawolves to just 14.3 percent three-point shooting and took a 13-7 advantage in steals.
The Pack was led by sophomore Meghan McGurie (Anaheim, Calif.) who hit four of five three-point shots to score a total of 23 points with six boards and five blocks. Freshman Brandi Fitzgerald (Moreno Valley, Calif.) chimed in with 10 points hitting on 7-13 from the field and three steals. Juniors Traci Graham (Reno, Nev.) and Sabrina Keys (Suisun, Calif.) each pitched in 10 points. Junior Jessica Preslar (Roseville, Calif.) led the team in rebounding with seven.
Two Sonoma players scored in double-digits with Jessica Jennings leading the way with 11 and Lauren Redfield added 10. Genny Anderson led the game in rebounding with eight.
Nevada will finally gets its season underway with a tough test of a road trip traveling to Portland State on Friday, Nov. 18 and then to the Pac-10's Oregon on Sunday, Nov. 20.
