San Jose, Calif. - The University of Nevada(13-7, 7-2 WAC) jumped out to a two games to none advantage over San Jose State(9-10, 4-3 WAC) in a Western Athletic Conference match on Thursday night at the Spartan Gym in San Jose, Calif. but the Spartans rallied to take the next three games and defeat the Wolf Pack 3-2. The Pack took games one and two by scores of 30-28, and 30-25 before the Spartans strung together three wins by scores of 30-16, 30-28, and 15-9 in the deciding fifth game to claim victory.
The loss was just the second in the last 14 matches for Nevada leaving them 13-7 overall and 7-2 in WAC play. The Pack also had their three match win streak snapped. SJSU improved to 9-10 on the season and 4-3 in league action.
Game one of the match was close as there were eight ties and four lead changes before the Pack won 30-28. The last tie came at 28-28 but a kill by Carly Sorensen followed by a kill by Karly Sipherd ended the game. Nevada hit .275 and SJSU .268 in game one.
Nevada scored the first point in game two and did not trail in winning 30-25. Sipherd ended game two just as she had done in the first game with a kill to score the Pack's 30th point and Nevada led two games to none in the match. The Pack hit .293 and held the Spartans to a .143 attack percentage.
Following the break SJSU came out of the locker room needing a win in the third game to keep the match going and did just that easily winning 30-16. SJSU scored the first point of the game and never looked back in pulling within a game at 2-1. The Spartans hit an amazing .593 while Nevada hit .258 in game three.
The Wolf Pack jumped out early in game four and held a five-point advantage at 10-5 but SJSU put together a 12-5 run to go in front 17-15. Nevada evened it all up at 28-28 but Colleen Burke recorded back to back kills to five the Spartans the game 30-28 and even the match at two games apiece. The Wolf Pack hit .293 in game four and SJSU .256.
After winning games three and four the momentum was on the side of SJSU and they carried it over to the deciding fifth game. The Spartans scored the first point of the deciding game and led by three at 5-2. Nevada closed the gap to a single point at 9-8 but following a SJSU timeout a 5-0 Spartan run made the score 14-8 as they went on to claim victory 15-9. SJSU had completed the incredible comeback to win the match 3-2.
Nevada was led by Teal Ericson's 23 kills and .396 attack percentage. Sorensen, and Sipherd tallied 16, and 14 kills respectively. Sorensen added 10 digs to post a double-double in the match. Setter Tristin Johnson had 52 assists on the night and her backup Ashley Miller totaled 12. Three additional Pack players reached double figures in digs led by libero Christine Harms' match high 18. Salaia Salave`a, and Lindsay Holda had 13, and 10 digs respectively in the match.
Jennifer Senftleben recorded a match high 26 kills for the Spartans and contributed 11 digs to record a double-double in the match. Burke(19), Nia Freeman(11), and Dyana Thompson(10) also reached double figures in kills. Setter Brittany Collet dished out a match high 58 assists on the night and Jessie Shull led SJSU with 14 digs.
SJSU out hit Nevada .282 to .271 in the match and won the blocking battle 9-7. Sipherd had a match high seven blocks, one solo, and six assisted.
Nevada concludes its two game road swing into California on Saturday afternoon at Fresno State at 1:00 p.m.
