Mike Furlong has completed three seasons as a member of the Nevada Basketball staff after being hired ahead of the 2022-23 season as the Video & Analytics Coordinator. In his current position, Furlong plays a critical role in initial film breakdown, film exchange, and scouting of opponents.
Since Furlong’s arrival in Reno, the Pack has seen tremendous success. In Furlong’s two seasons on staff, Furlong has helped Nevada achieve a combined record of 48-17, including a mark of 26-11 in Mountain West play. Furlong has also helped the Pack reach the NCAA Tournament in each of his seasons on staff.
Furlong was an instrumental piece in a historical season for Nevada this past year, as the Pack compiled a record of 26-8, including a mark of 13-5 in conference play, finishing tied for second in the Mountain West. The Pack also won the 2023 Diamond Head Classic Championship, defeated the most AP ranked opponents in a single season in program history (3), was named ESPN’s National Team of the Week after consecutive victories over Utah State and San Diego State, and Nevada earned a 10 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Nine Wolf Pack players have earned All-MW recognition in the two seasons that Furlong has been on staff. This past year, Jarod Lucas (Second Team), Kenan Blackshear (Second Team), Nick Davidson (Third Team), and Tre Coleman (Defensive Team) each garnered All-Conference recognition. In 2022-23, Lucas (Second Team), Blackshear (Second Team), Will Baker (Third Team), Darrion Williams (Freshman of the Year), and Coleman (Defensive Team) earned the prestigious awards.
Prior to joining the Nevada men’s basketball staff, Furlong spent seven seasons working with the men’s basketball program at Kansas State. He began his time with the Wildcats as a Graduate Assistant in 2015, where his primary responsibilities included assisting with initial breakdown of game video, aiding in scouting opponents, and coordinating film exchanges with the video coordinator at the time.
After two seasons as a Graduate Assistant, Furlong was promoted to Director of Men’s Basketball Video Services, a role he held for two years before being promoted again to the Director of Student-Athlete Development ahead of the 2019-20 season.
In his position as Director of Student-Athlete Development, Furlong had a variety of responsibilities, including some basketball-related matters, handling special projects for the staff, and assisting with community service projects. He also played a crucial role in the student-athletes’ academic development, career planning, and goal setting.
Furlong helped six Wildcat players earn Academic All-Big 12 honors, including two First Team selections in 2020-21. He also helped Kansas State earn a combined 34 selections to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll.
During his seven seasons on the Kansas State staff, Furlong helped the Wildcats earn 122 victories, including back-to-back 25-win campaigns in 2017-18 & 2018-19, in addition to three NCAA Tournament appearances, one Elite Eight appearance, and a 2019 Big-12 regular season Championship.
In October of 2021, Furlong was recognized by Silver Waves Media as one of the top-50 most notable support staff in Division I men’s basketball.
Furlong is originally from Livonia, Michigan, and he played four years of college basketball for Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan. Throughout his career playing for the Chargers, he helped Hillsdale to a 72-38 record and a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) regular-season Championship in 2011-12. Furlong served as a team captain in his final season in 2014-15.
Furlong holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing Management from Hillsdale College and a Master’s Degree in Academic Advising from Kansas State.
Furlong and his wife, Kim, were married in June 2021, and she currently holds the position of Assistant Athletics Director, Student Athlete Services.
