San Diego State stuns Nevada in ninth

San Diego State 7, Nevada 4
Friday, May 9, 2025
Reno, Nev. - Don Weir Field at Peccole Park

WP: Aidan Russell (2-1)
LP: Logan Saloman (2-1)

RENO, Nev. - San Diego State, down to its final out, scored four times in the top of the ninth to stun Nevada, 7-4, in Friday's series opener at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park.

Logan Saloman got the first two Aztec batters to start the ninth with the Wolf Pack holding on to a 4-3 lead. But back-to-back doubles from Finley Bates and Jonathan Smith tied it up at 4-4.

Closer Ethan O'Neal came on after an intentional walk to Nevan Noonan, and surrendered a two-run triple down the line in right to CJ Moran. A wild pitch would plate Moran with the final run for San Diego State (16-35, 11-14 MW).

Aidan Russell finished a scoreless ninth to improve to 2-1 for the Aztecs. Russell gave up just two hits and struck out three over the final 2.1 innings. Saloman fell to 2-1 for Nevada, charged with three runs over 2.2 innings.

Nevada (29-20, 15-10 MW) missed a chance to clinch a top-six spot and a place in May 21-24's Mountain West Championship. But the Wolf Pack fortunately remained in a three-way tie atop the Mountain West standings as New Mexico and Fresno State each also lost Friday.

The Wolf Pack fell into an early 3-0 hole Friday night until the bats woke up against Aztec starter Xavier Cardenas III in the fifth. Jackson Waller and Jake Harvey each had an RBI single find a hole to bring Nevada to within a run at 3-2. An inning later, Sean Yamaguchi climbed the ladder, tomahawking a Cardenas fastball deep and out to left to tie it up at 3-3.

Nevada starter Peyton Fosher struck out five and allowed just three runs on six hits, taking a no-decision. Cardenas, for his part, struck out 10 while also giving up six hits and four runs (two earned) in his own no-decision.

Nevada took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the seventh, as Harvey lined an RBI single up the middle to score Jacob Doyle. Harvey and Waller each went 2-for-4 to lead Nevada Friday.

The teams return to Peccole Park for the series' second game Saturday at 2:05 p.m.
