SAN JOSE - Nevada dropped the regular-season finale at San Jose State, 10-2, as the Spartans broke open a one-run game with six runs in the fifth.
Despite the loss, Nevada (33-21, 19-11 MW) is the outright Mountain West regular season champion thanks to Fresno State's loss at New Mexico earlier Saturday. The Wolf Pack, as the No. 1 seed at next week's Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship at Sloan Park in Mesa, Ariz., will open play in the double-elimination portion of the tournament Thursday, May 22, at 1:05 p.m. against the winner of Wednesday's UNLV-San Diego State play-in game.
Saturday, Nevada pulled even at 2-2 on a
Jake Harvey sacrifice fly and
Michael Ball RBI single in the third. But the Spartans (26-28, 13-17 MW) scored eight unanswered the rest of the way to take control.
San José State's run began with Jake McCoy's solo homer off of Wolf Pack starter
Casey Burfield in the fourth. An inning later, Alex Fernandes' one-out single scored Antonio Nanez to make it 4-2, and an RBI triple from Zach Chamizo followed by McCoy's RBI double chased Burfield with the score 6-2.
Eric Valdez came on, and the Spartans added three more runs, two coming on Jeriah Lewis' two-run homer. Burfield fell to 4-3 on the year, charged with seven runs on seven hits over 4.2 innings.
Spartan starter Kyle Calzadiaz struck out seven and allowed just two runs (one earned) on seven hits over eight innings to get the win and improve to 2-2.
Harvey went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Wolf Pack, while on the other side, McCoy was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, coming up just a triple shy of the cycle. Lewis led four Spartans with two hits apiece.
