USAFA, Colo. - Air Force stunned Nevada with 15 unanswered runs Friday, overcoming an early five-run Wolf Pack outburst and taking the series opener, 15-5 in eight innings.
Nevada (23-18, 10-9 MW) used a
Taylor Holder three-run homer in a four-run second to go on to a 5-0 lead after five and a half, but things began to turn Air Force's way in the bottom half of the fifth.
Wolf Pack starter
Peyton Fosher had worked well through four scoreless innings until running into trouble in the fifth. With two on, T.J. Oster cracked a three-run shot to left, cutting Nevada's lead to 5-3.
An inning later, Walker Zapp hit a solo homer, then Christian Taylor doubled in Zach Peters to tie it up at 5-5.
The Falcons (17-25, 9-10 MW) broke it open with five more runs in the seventh. Three-straight singles off of
Dominic Desch led to the go-ahead run, then Ben Niednagel came in on a wild pitch for a 7-5 lead. Air Force would get its final runs of the frame on an RBI groundout and a two-run error in left on Holder.
Zapp's two-run single in the eighth highlighted the Falcons' game-ending frame, as he went 3-for-4 with three RBIs on the day. Luke Elmore walked it off with a two-out RBI single.
Desch suffered his first loss of the year, falling to 4-1 giving up eight runs (six earned) over 1.2 innings. Fosher went the first 5.1 innings, giving up five runs and taking a no-decision.
Dylan Rogers got the win in relief for Air Force, coming on for Davis Rhyne in the third and going 5.1 innings with only an unearned run surrendered.
Along with Holder's three-run homer,
Jake Harvey led the Wolf Pack with three hits, while
Michael Ball went 2-for-3.
Nevada will try to even the series Saturday at 12:05 p.m. PT.
