RENO, Nev. – Nevada Softball jumps to the top of the Mountain West Standings after winning both games of its doubleheader against UNLV. The Pack defeated the Rebels 5-4 and 4-2, all but confirming points for Nevada in the Silver State Series presented by American First Credit Union.
Â
Nevada 5, UNLV 4
Game one was dominated by senior
Aaliyah Jenkins. Jenkins, fresh off her second consecutive Mountain West Player of the Week award, went three-for-three with a pair of home runs and a triple, driving three runs across for the Pack. Jenkins's 11 total bases are the third most in Nevada history.
Â
Nevada had to fight from behind, as UNLV scored two in the first inning thanks to a Charelle Aki two-run double to left-center field.
Â
In her first at-bat, Jenkins homered to centerfield in a full count, her ninth home run of the year. UNLV responded with a home run of their own, as Maggie Vasa homered to center field.
Â
In the third inning, Jenkins hit her second home run of the game with
Saige Alfaro on second base. This marked Jenkins's third career multi-home run game.
Â
The Rebels once again responded with a home run as Aki tallied her third RBI of the game.
Â
Nevada took the lead in large part due to an error by UNLV. With a runner on first base, Alfaro singled on a bunt to the third baseman, who threw to nobody covering first base. The ball sailed into right field, allowing
Haylee Engelbrecht to score and Alfaro to reach third.
Madison Clark followed with a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Alfaro. Jenkins hit a triple following the sacrifice fly, finishing her historic game at the plate.
Â
The Rebels looked to have something going in the sixth inning with a lead-off walk being bunted into scoring position. A sharp lineout to Jenkins in right allowed her to cap off her game with an outfield assist, doubling up the runner at second base to end the inning.
Â
Hailey McLean entered the game to close out the Wolf Pack win. Facing three batters, McLean struck out the first two and got a flyout to end the game and get her third save of the season. McLean's third save ties for the third most in a Wolf Pack season.
Â
Engelbrecht stood out in game one, with a walk and a single, the 12
th time she has reached base multiple times this season.
Â
Nevada 4, UNLV 2
McLean made her second appearance of the day in game two pitching her sixth complete game of the season, only allowing four hits and two runs, one earned, while striking out eight, bringing her total on the day to 10.
Â
The Sparks native got to work quickly, striking out two batters in the first inning and two more in the second, tallying the 300
th strikeout of her career.
Â
In the first inning, Alfaro led off with a double to the right field gap, being bunted to third on a Clark sacrifice hit.
Maya Larsen singled to score Alfaro and get the Pack on the board first.
Â
Hannah Di Genova broke her 28-game homerless drought with a line drive over the center field fence.
Â
The Rebels tied the game with runs in the fourth and fifth innings. A leadoff home run by Jesse Farrell got UNLV on the board, and an errant throw by Jenkins allowed a second run to score and tie the game.
Â
The Pack responded immediately, hitting back-to-back home runs for the third time this season. Engelbrecht got her second extra-base hit of the game with her 10
th career double. Alfaro followed with her first home run for Nevada, crushing the ball over the rightfield fence.
Â
McLean closed the game with two scoreless innings and a nail-biting pop fly to shallow right field to end the game.
Â
Engelbrecht and Alfaro each finished the game with a double and a home run. Jenkins kept her on-base streak alive, walking to extend the streak to 10 games.
Â
After eight games acros the Mountain West, the Pack jumped to the top of the conference standings with a 6-2 record, tied with Utah State. Nevada holds the tiebreaker over the Aggies.
