PULLMAN, Wash. - Nevada's hopes for a sweep at Washington State were dashed Saturday as the Cougars took a 13-1, seven-inning win.
The Cougars (15-23, 8-10 MW) scored thrice in the bottom of the first and never looked back. A single, a hit-by-pitch, and a walk against Nevada starter
Casey Burfield loaded the bases with none out, and the first run came across on Will Cresswell's sacrifice fly to center.
Skjonsby scored on a wild pitch, then Ollie Obenour plated Lance Johnstone with a single to center.
Burfield fell to 2-2 on the year, going just 3.2 innings and giving up seven runs on five hits and three walks.
Johnstone added a solo homer for the Cougs in the third, capping a 1-for-2 day with three runs scored. Cresswell and Obenour each went 2-for-3, with four and three RBIS, respectively.
Luke Meyers improved to 4-1 for Washington State by going six scoreless innings, giving up just five hits.
Sean Yamaguchi drove in the only run for Nevada (22-17, 10-8 MW) on a fielder's choice in the seventh.
Nevada hosts Sacramento State Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. before returning to Mountain West play at Air Force next Friday-Sunday.
