FRESNO, Calif. - Nevada dropped its opening series of Mountain West play with Sunday's 13-0, seven-inning loss at Fresno State.
The Wolf Pack closes the road trip Monday at Santa Clara with first pitch set for 5 p.m. Nevada hosts its first Mountain West series of the season next Friday through Sunday (March 21-23), beginning with Friday's 6:05 p.m. contest against New Mexico.
Sunday, Nevada (11-8, 1-2 MW) was stymied by Fresno State starter Kaleb Hay, who went the distance and struck out 10 while holding the Wolf Pack to five hits.
Michael Ball led the game off with a single, but Hay retired the next seven Wolf Pack batters while the Bulldogs (8-11, 2-1 MW) put up five runs in support over the first three innings. Eddie Saldivar opened the scoring with an RBI single in the second, on the way to a 5-for-5 day. Justin Stransky hit a two-run homer in the third to put the Bulldogs up 5-0.
The Wolf Pack got two on in the third but could not capitalize. Fresno State would then score three in the fourth to open up an 8-0 lead.
Casey Burfield fell to 1-1 on the year, giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits over three innings.
