STANFORD, Calif. – Nevada Softball won one of two on Saturday at the DeMarini Classic in Stanford. The Wolf Pack defeated California Baptist, 7-4, but fell to #18 Stanford, 4-1.
Â
California Baptist 4, Nevada 7
California Baptist got on the board first and quickly, singling on a flare to left field. The Lancers homered two batters later to take a 2-0 lead in the first. CBU pitching doubled down on their early lead with three straight groundouts from the top of the Wolf Pack lineup.
Â
Jessica McPartland responded with her own 1-2-3 inning to give the Pack momentum.
Haylee Engelbrecht continued her strong weekend, hitting her first of two doubles.
Maya Larsen singled to left field to score Engelbrecht. Larsen finished the game two-for-three and leads the team with a .600 batting average for the weekend.
Â
Aaliyah Jenkins tied the game in the third inning, homering to left field to extend her lead on the program home run record.
Â
The Lancers retook the lead in the fourth inning. A single to lead off the inning was moved around to third base via a sacrifice bunt and ground ball. Another single scored the run and would turn into a run itself after scoring on a wild pitch.
Â
Ainsley Berlingeri relieved McPartland in the middle of the top of the fourth inning, getting her first strikeout on a dropped third strike that allowed the fourth CBU run to score on the wild pitch. Berlingeri got back-to-back strikeouts to start the fifth, part of her 1-2-3 inning. Berlingeri got her fourth strikeout to begin a hitless top of the sixth.
Â
The Pack did its damage in the sixth inning. Engelbrecht got things going with her second double of the day, advancing to third on a Larsen single.
Bailie Clark laid down a perfect bunt to single and load the bases. Pinch hitting,
Tatum Maytorena got an RBI groundout to score Engelbrecht. Larsen's pinch runner,
Lexi O'Gorman, and Clark each scored on a Lancer error off the bat of
Matlyn Leetch.
Saige Alfaro kept things rolling with a single, setting up Jenkins for a two-run double scoring Leetch and Alfaro.
Â
Despite allowing a walk to begin the seventh inning, Berlingeri shut down the Lancers with three flyouts in a row. Berlingeri finished the game only giving up one hit and two walks in 3.1 innings. She struck out four batters while earning her fifth win of the season.

The pitchers dominated the second game of the day.
Hailey McLean got her 11
th start of the season for the Pack, striking out nine batters in her third complete game of the year.
Â
The first inning was a preview of what was in store, with both pitchers striking out a pair of batters in three-up-three-down innings. The Cardinal would end up retiring the first 11 Wolf Pack batters in order before
Haley Painter drew a walk to give Nevada a base runner.
Â
Prior to Painter's walk, Stanford got on the board first with a hit batter that was driven in by a triple from the next batter. Despite the run, McLean struck out three batters in the second inning.
Â
The first Nevada base runner, Painter, reached in the fourth inning. A two-out opportunity arose when Engelbrecht reached second on an error by the Stanford left fielder, getting Painter to third base. A flyout thwarted the opportunity, ending the Nevada half of the inning.
Â
McLean threw another hitless inning in the fourth but gave up two free passes. A two-strike popout caught by McLean herself ended that Cardinal chance.
Â
O'Gorman brought life to the Wolf Pack dugout with her first career home run. After fouling off pitch after pitch, O'Gorman straightened out a ball just enough to get out of the park.
Â
The excitement was soon dampened by the Stanford offense. In the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinal reached base via a hit by pitch. A single and double saw the leadoff batter come around to retake the lead. The next batter doubled to score a runner and move the other to third. A flyout to left field gave the Cardinal enough time to score the runner on third via a sacrifice fly.
Â
Nevada had a huge opportunity in the seventh inning, getting three free bases via a hit batter and two walks. With one out and the bases loaded, a pop out to the catcher and a looking strikeout ended the game.
Â
The Pack returns to Stanford Stadium for the final day of the DeMarini Invitational with a noon game against Stanford.
